Lubricating Door Mirror?

Hi all,

My GS is only a few months old but already the one door mirror is creaking and groaning when it folds. I'm concerned that if I don't do something about it now then something will give way in due course.

Does anyone know the best way to lubricate it - where/how etc.?

It generally happens on occasions, there is enough lube already but it needs spreading around.
Make sure the mirrors are in the driving position then grab the mirror and pull towards the bonnet and push back towards the door a few times to re-lubricate, then return to its original position, don't worry you won't break them.

Push the whole mirror housing towards the front of car, it will give a click/clunk sometimes but then move it too and fro followed by some silican spray around the moving parts.

Had this a couple of times, tend to apply following maxim within reason in such occasions

If it isnt moving but it should then use wd40, if is moving but it shouldnt use duct tape

With the wing mirrors i have found if you spray wd40 around the seam using the narrow applicator and then rotate mirror all the way forward you can see some of the mechanism and again apply wd40. Have not had to reapply yet after 6 months and working smooth and quiet.

By all means use WD40 to free them up if sticking, but WD40 isn't intended to be a lubricant (the WD stands for Water Dispersant, which is what it was originally intended for) so best to finish with a good spray of silicone or similar lubricant.

Agreed, you must use a silicone lubricant. Best way of applying is as stated above but so you can be very liberal with the spray I have in the past tied an old hand towel behind the mirror like a baby's bib so it collects all the surplus lubricant and does not make a mess of the paintwork.

A good alternative I've found to silicone spray is the DRY chain lube spray you can get for bikes. NOT the wet type, that gets everywhere, but the dry type is specifically formulated to creep and then stay put, without a wet surface. Works well for padlocks and outside door hinges. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

I used the degreaser to clean our cooker hood..Does the job very very well..
Used the lithium grease for the garage doors...great product.
