Advice required - 6 year old Freelander 2

Hi

Just after some advice my pride and joy is coming up 6 years old at the end of Jan, car has about 60.000 miles on and has been serviced religiously at TVLR.
Question is now that the car is getting to such an age is it worth paying the premium to have a Land Rover stamp in the book or should I just get it serviced at a recommended local garage?
Thanks Current 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Black 2016 Onwards

Hi Hunter1, I will be in similar position soon - I have 56,500 miles on my 07 GS - and have always had it Main dealer serviced which I think may have contributed in some part to it's excellent condition and reliability. Recently the ABS modulator failed and the Main dealer price for replacing it was several hundred pounds more than an independent so I tried DAS Landy specialists - and would go back to them anytime now. I think the key is to find a local Independent that you have confidence in and I would always choose a Landrover Specialist rather than an ordinary garage as Landies are so complicated nowadays. No matter how good a mechanic- if he does not have the pooter to diagnose the Landie electrics then can't do much. My previous car was an XJ 4.0 - lovely wagon - serviced by Jag from new until I found a local Jag Specialist (Surrey Jag Centre) who actualy did a much more thorough and professional job than the Main dealers so I used them for many years and saved a huge amount of dosh. Am moving to the West Country soon so first mission will be to find a Landie Specilaist in those parts - any advice welcome. I don't think the possible adverse impact on resale value will be enough to outweigh the huge cost saving - why pay Landrover Main dealer rates to fill your screenwash! I like to keep my cars for many years so the eventual resale value will be buttons - whether serviced by Main dealer or Indy.
Cheers,
Robin

+1 0n what Robin said. IMHO as long as the book is stamped by a reputable indy I don't think it will make much difference. Since mine ran out of extended warranty I service myself...that way I can be sure everything is done as it should be. I even fill in the book myself, keep all receipts and a spreadsheet record!

Whereabouts in the west country are you looking Robin? John

if you were getting the car serviced there and they know its history then when you come to sell and trade it in, they might look more favourable on whats offered as they know its history

that was what my local servicing dealer told me when look at the new FL2 the other month

Thanks guys
Npinks its been serviced at TVLR they aren't a dealer just a service centre so no benefit from them, but I did think that it may benefit when coming to trade in but at the moment can't see it been changed for a while, unless my numbers come up on the lottery Shocked Current 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Black 2016 Onwards

I have had this debate with myself for the past two years. Mine is pasted six years old now and it has had perfect reliability in the 5 1/2 years I have had it.

Is this down to the fact that it has a main dealer service history? Quite possibly, but there is another point to consider here.

The cars are getting to the age now where a whole new market is available for these cars, eg the market for people who only buy cars that are 5-6 year old +.

After speaking to a couple of people in the trade, we know that LR has not had the best reputation in the past for reliability, and people who buy older cars may not really know about how far LR reliability has improved etc, and would look for main dealer history.

The traders I know have all said, that a full service history is of course paramount, but when buyers are looking at cars that are 6 years old plus, if the car has a full main dealer service history it 'may' be worth a little more but would be far easier to sell as non enthusiasts would look more favourably at an older car with a full main dealer service history than those with a non franchised history.

I for sure will continue to use the main dealer, on average it may cost me up to a £100 more, which over the course of a year is nothing.

The non car person, could look at a car that has had main dealer history for 5 years then non dealer serviceing thereafter, may have the thought "They are obviously not bothered any more as they don't use the main dealer".

We know this statement is not true, but the general popuation don't think about it like we do.

My Astra is now 10 years old and does about 1100 miles a year, but it still goes to the main dealer each year for it's service. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

TVLR Service Centre are a service centre with full LR approval, and have accesse to the full LR database and latest software updates, which I doubt a local normal garage would have. They also have direct contact with the LR Tech guys another service that a normal garage wouldn't be able to offer, plus they have a wide knowledge of all things LR and I'd rather have them checking things out on my Freelander than Jo Bloggs Garage, who actually may end up causing more damage.

But as the saying goes " you pays your money and takes your choice" me personally will continue using TVLR as long as I have Freelander, new or used

Tradewind35. Advance welcome to the "sunny southwest". I know you are looking for an indy, but in the meantime you might try Roger Young in Saltash. Flawless service - would never use anyone else. Bring some sun with you when you come.
