I have to admit total ignorance when it comes to engines etc.
But ... have an 07 plate 2.2 TD4 HSE with 71k on the clock. Its sounding rubbish at the moment and has a low rumble noise coming from underneath. It lags when it should be changing gear, then if you do it manually, it still sounds the same.

I am at a loss as to what this can be, but it has been mentioned that it could be that the automatic gearbox is low on oil and it could do with a top up....

At what point in its life should this be done (in the normal service schedule) ?

Can any one tell me how, as a novice I would even check the gearbox oil level ? then if its low, how to top it up ?

Any help or tip would be greatly appreciated.

It's a bit time consuming but I suggest you hit the search button, there are a few threads on here regarding your problem, sadly I don't think lack of oil will be the cure, there are diagrams on the threads also.
