Intermittent Squealing Noise

All,

I have a strange intermittent squealing noise coming from the car whenever I set of from stationary. Noise goes when I get to about 25 MPH and sometimes comes back when I slowdown. cannot tell if it’s coming from the left or right but would appear to be from the rear???
I’ve noticed a post on this forum mentioning problems with the rear pads & linings but I’ve had both back wheels off tonight and they seem OK, about 5mm of friction material left (haven’t taken the pads off the calliper though). Spun the rear wheels by hand and no obvious problems, no play on the wheel bearings, driveshafts and the disks seem OK. Front pads look OK when viewed through the front wheels. No noise when I brake and the brake / handbrake performance is normal.

It does however seem a little like metal on metal though.

Anyone any ideas before I strip the pads down at weekend?

Thanks,

Chris

Are you sure its from the rear, sounds travel and appears to come from places other than the source, could it be a slipping alternator drive belt, maybe?

I agree, that's the usual source of a squealing sound.

Update:
Just stripped the rear pads off and found the drivers side inner pad friction material to be detached from the metal backing plate. Put new pads on and all seemed OK during the test drive. I will check again tomorrow on a longer run. Fingers crossed.
Pads were £26.11 inc VAT from the local motor factors.
