may be "optimised" for road conditions etc, but not for economy. ( similar concept to cruise control )

will never achieve better economy than a manual with a good driver.

The DPF traps the soot...under 'normal' conditions the car can burn off the soot however under other conditions (particularly lots of short journeys) the system gets too full of soot and you need to take it your local LR Chimney Sweep who will get his brushes out and give your wallet a thoroughly good clear out.
