Despite my previous comment, it may be worth adding that all Freelanders, 1 and 2, seem to be sensitive to worn tyres. When I changed mine, for the same make and pattern of tyre, there was a noticeable noise difference. Hope the tyre change solves your problem. It's more likely to be the tyres than the wheels themselves.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

To follow up this thread, I eventually got to the bottom of the fault (and fault there was!). I changed the wheels/tyres back to the (almost new) wranglers. Everything was smooth at first and on short journeys. But, over 20 miles or more, I experienced judder on the steering, especially on braking. It was definitely not feeling right, so I took it back to the dealer mechanic. After a short drive,(I had already done 25 miles) he confirmed there was a real problem! This turned out to be a seized brake caliper, only showing itself after it had a chance to get hot. A new set of discs/pads and a new caliper later and it was faultless again! Inspection of the removed caliper revealed a split weather seal on the piston that must have brought about corrosion and eventual seizure. All fixed under dealer warranty.
