Remove rear prop shaft?

My 2011 MY SD190 needed new fuel gauge sensor due to faulty readings. Rear propshaft needs to be removed to lower fuel tank, when I called at dealers to collect car they had removed the drive shafts and rear diff complete with propshaft. Said shaft does not detatch from diff. I find this strange.
All sorted now and LR assist authorised hire Disco 4 HSE for journey to Southampton (to join cruise) and Jaguar XF 3 litre Twin Turbo for return 3 weeks later.
