2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Zermatt Silver
3 years old next week - do I move it on?

My 08 HSE has its 3rd birthday next week. Im undecided as to whether to move it on. The car has done 36000 miles which have seen it in the dealers a few times for warranty work. It looks like its final waranty repair is to be the rear engine oil seal after that Im out there on my own. Im more than happy with the car but obviously mileage and time will see it needing more attention.

To change for a similar nearly new model Im looking at having to spend anything up to 15k which is obvioulsy a fair wedge. Then again Im not one for "running them into the ground"

Have any other owners been through this dilemma

As someone who would normally expect 3 year's use to bring up around 90,000 miles, I'd feel that a 36,000 mile old car of the same age to be no more than nicely run in. My current car (a Volvo V70) has now completed over 103,000 miles (over 4 years) and is due to go back in 2 weeks. A customer of mine is considering buying it from the lease company and it would be a good idea if he did, because I know it's good for another 103,000 miles!

By all means buy new if that's what you want to do. However, you will not only be parting with £15,000, but you'll be putting yourself right back at the very steepest part of the depreciation curve - inviting another £15,000 depreciation over the coming 3 years! In comparison, paying for Land Rover's extended warranty at £550 for another year looks like a complete bargain!

I was in a similar situation in April with my HSE, but which had done 50K miles. In the end, having to part with £15-17K to get broadly the same car just didn't make sense to me. I had the car in for a few minor warranty issues just before the warranty expired, and reckon that even if something major happens now, it'll cost nothing like £15K! And at 50K it's running really well, more economical than ever and no issues at all... I think I will keep it until it's 5 years old. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE auto Tonga Green/Alpaca

I'm in a similar position, change it now and stump up £££ or wait another year and stump up even more cash. In the end the mrs wanted almond leather I couldnt get excited about the whole deal so I did nothing.

the evoque offers a much wider choice of leather colours Whistle

I suggest wait until winter for the best prices on used fl2's

As for extended warranty. If you can afford a major repair without selling the family silver then take the risk, t At work

My thoughts would be if you're happy with the vehicle - keep hold for longer.

If you "want" to change it - change it - (or buy a new private plate!)

If you expect to spend £15,000 on repairs in the next year get the LR warranty. 2002 Honda VFR800

Frankly, at that mileage, I would keep it and save the money, It alsao means that you are free to move outwith the main dealewr network and get any work done by a good reputable garage at much less than the main dealers charge. It makes no sense selling it now and getting bacxk on to the top of the depreciation slope again. You will have to change one day so get into the habit of saving a monthly sum towards that day. It will also save you the stress of going to dealers and trying to do a deal, which - for one, hate! Good luck!

Had a similar dilema a couple of months ago - 3 years old and 48K, to be honest my cars have normally done in excess of 90k by three years, so this ones like new.

In the end I couldn't get excited about anything LR had to offer, the newer cars are a little better on fuel, and cheaper to tax, the external appearance is roughly the same, and the internals I have always liked. So it would have been a waste of £16k, to get a similar car in a worse colour.

Didn't take out the extended warranty - not that I don't think it is good value, I am looking forward to tinkering - and yes a rear oil seal would be a fun few days tinkering Very Happy

Agree, new model doesn't offer £15k worth of investment. If you want a FL2 keep it, 36k is nothing! If you want a change, go for it! Thumbs Up 2010MY Freelander 2 HSE Auto

thanks folks, your replies are broadly around my thoughts. Ive enquired about LR extended warranty but even the service people at the dealer said it wasnt worth the price in that it covered nothibg like the manufacturers one. as its been said, the facelift version is just not different enough, certainly not 15k different. I was spoiled with this one in that i bought it 4 months old with only a few miles on it for 23k, not bad when a new HSE was 35k. I cant see that happening again!

I have actually had a test drive in a new Kia Sportage 2.0 CRTdi today and was suprisingly impressed with it. Well specced, very refined, handled well and very stylish inside. Top of range model 27k. In fact I could find nothing to fault it. I got back into the Freel and to be honest it felt a bit "old"

Oh well, we shall see.

Ignoring this bit of heresy for the moment (!) Rolling Eyes, this thread does seem to show that LR should have put a lot more effort into the face-lift; there just isn't enough difference to seriously consider an upgrade...

Buy British my man support your own land.
Its the model specs and option choices that put me off a new fl2 rather than the face lift, oh and that gawdy chrome arse peice. I want an XS spec but without the expensive, un-needed and some what old fashioned sat nav.
for that sort of cash I expect a media player not a clueless bint in a box. At work

Well specced yes, stylish maybe (spends on your taste). But refined and handled well? - no way! I did a longish road test and was very disappointed in the fidgety ride. I've since found that's a common finding. Brian
