Booked in for 30k service, and mentioned the whine to be addressed. The dealer asked whether my tyres were old ("that's probably what it is, sir"). So (as they were pretty much ready), I bought two new rears today. And .... drum roll ...

... It's just the same. Let's see what they diagnose in a week or two.

I just wanted to mention that this seems to be the dealer's pat answer.

If its anything like mine, they (dealer) had NSR wheel bearing as most likely, but had to concede my diagnosis of the rear diff was the cause.

Have you towed with yours?

That's (tyre noise) is exactly what our dealer said. My thoughts are a) wheel bearing, or, b) a rear diff problem. Her Laydship's FL2 has never towed.

October is the month that we put winter tyres on here in Switzerland and I will see if that makes a difference - if not it will be further evidence of my long held thought that Swiss LR dealers really know very little about the FL2 and its endemic faults.

What happens if you swap the front wheels with the rears?
Does it get worse if you go around a left or a right-hand corner?

Yes. Noisier under acceleration than on overrun

Haven't done both yet. Have put new tyres on year, and swapped one side - no change

I had a whine from the rear of my FL2 which increased with speed.

The final test was to swing the vehicle from side to side - throughing the body weight from side to side.

In my case the noise stopped as the body weigth shifted to the right - rear left wheel bearing...


I assume if it is the Rear Diff that the noise won't change using the test just described. 2002 Honda VFR800

simple diff problem ,if noise is on accelaration going in a straight line and when you back off the gas on what is called overun if noise apparrant its the diff,

if noise comes & goes when cornering its the wheel bearings

i can;t see what the problem is with the dealer if its under warranty, what type of life vehicle has weather it tows or not should not have a effect of life of parts remember 3 year warranty parts will have been quality controled at the factory to very high standards if the part is failing within this period is should be coverd  rainy-city

The first reported rear diff failures I have read about (& clutches for that matter) were on one of the caravanning forums I read.

Dealers will tell you they have done quite a few diffs, both of which suggests towing IS a factor as puts more load on it, & call me cynical if you want but also that the design 'wasn't up to the job'. Whether the bearing spec has changed from earlier cars, who knows other than LR, but I doubt they would confirm or deny.

As for quality control at the factory, I'm sure that is fine but they will rely on the diff supplier to do this not workers on the production line.

Fair points. Car has never towed. Of 90 miles per day, 80 are easy motorway.
Sounds like diff. Will know next week as it's booked in. MY10 TD4.e HSE
