Ive Just developed A Noise from The Rear Diff On My 2007 Freelander 2
I Understand This Is A Common problem On freelander 2
Does Anyone Know If The Rear Diffs Can Be repaired Or Will I have To Replace The Rear Diff Assembly
If So Where Can i Find One? (Apart from Landrover)

Hi - the known problem is the diff nose bearing (yes, it's happened to mine at 58k miles). The issue is a defect in one or more of the rolling elements that makes a noise at all speeds and loads - I found it hard to tell whether it was one side or the other or the middle but dealer ran in up on a wheel-free ramp to confirm.

The repair can be done by replacing the bearing (quite a cheap part) - LR call this the "low line" repair if under warranty. The problem is that you need 5 LR tools to dismantle the bearing, replace and rebuild with the correct preload between crown wheel and pinion gear teeth. The bearing does not seem to fail catastrophically meaning that there are not load of bits in the diff - replacing the bearing is therefore OK.

The quick repair is a whole diff (2.5h) if you can afford it or persuade LR! Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

Just had exactly the same thing with a FL2 Im buying from a dealer. Fortunately they said they will replace the part before but apparently it is a common problem. Anyone know how often they go if they have been replaced? etc

I had a whirring noise emanating from the rear of my FL2, was worried it was a diff prob turned out to be a rear wheel baring and a cheap fix

Had Rear Differential Lower Level Repair Done Last Week By My Local Landrover Specialist
The Rear Diff Is Now Nice N Quiet
I Can Actually Drive The Car Without Having To Turn The Radio On, & Turning The Volume Up To Drown The Droaning Noise

concern of excessive humming noise and or rumble or high pitched whine coming form the rear of the vehicle, diagnosis identifies the noise is coming from the rear differential assembly
Cause: Pinion tail bearing spalling caused by subsurface material deformation. Cause of subsurface deformation is static overload

My 57 plate Freelander with 40k on the clock has just started to produce this symptom! A droning noise is coming from the diff.
After having a new flywheel & clutch assembly at 23k miles I didn't expect to have any more issues so soon.

Many Thanks for the specific info Bazza Boy. Almost traded in the wife to pay for a new diff unit @ £2.5k +. Should be able to get the job done for less than the national debt now.
Question; if this is a long standing and known problem, how come it hasn't been solved by now, Iv'e read about this problem going back about at least eigth years or so in other blogs.

Check the rear wheel bearing, - its a lot cheaper then a new diff !
( had to have my n/s/r done a 32,000 miles) only had a small amount of play in it and the noise humming / rumbling /drumming sound was bad at motorway speeds.
It cost approx £175.00 to have it done, You need a press to remove and fit the new one !!
