Remap and fuel consumption

Can anyone give me some advice, I recently bought a Fl2 sd4 2013 model. Myconsumtion is 9.5 l/100 open road and 11.5 in town. I would like to better this. Will a remap make a worthwhile differance? I dont really need more power just better consumption. Is it safe in the long term? Already checked tyre pressure, new airfilter new oilfilter and oil. Any advice will be appreciated.

Have a look at the Blue Spark modules. Very quick to install and it simply gives more torque lower down in the rev range, therefore reducing the number of gear changes and resulting revs. Combined with an EGR blanking plate I am getting mid - high 30s per gallon in my auto SD4 Thumbs Up Cheers,
Raz

Razman is completely right - fitted a bluespark and EGR blanking plate and I get +40MPG .

You can get a bluespark inline chip from Ebay.

Thank you for the advice, so do you remove and blank off the EGR yourself?

hi
Buy the blanking plate off ebay - £5.
Its a very simple job, just loosen 2 nuts, squeeze the plate in - tighten - and enjoy.

If you have a later model you may want to check the plate as one with a small hole in it is required. Mine is a 2007 model so its the plate without a hole.

Back in July 2017 Yorky Bob was pleading to hear from anyone who had experience of blanking the EGR of a 2013 onwards version. I don't think he received any replies back then........................

Has anyone done it and if so how did it go??

Steve

If you increase your power and torque by (over)boosting and fuelling what else do you need to do to make the car safe and reliable.
Blue spark advertise a power increase from 190 to 235 hp, and , more worryingly, a torque increase from 310 to 362 ft lbs.

That is an increase of about a sixth on the load on drive shafts, gearing and bearings.

Also I wonder about the settings of the auto gearbox and its ability to match the new drive train.

In my early years of tinkering, I managed to overstress quite a few bits in my (crude) attempts to extract more power from my cars. I also learned that it is possible to ruin bearings when trying for greater cornering power.

Now I am old and more cautious, but must admit it was interesting and fun, if a little expensive. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)

(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

What I have noticed in doing the power increase - is that the car is more driveable.
The pickup is comparable to a normal 2WD car, the turbo lag is greatly reduced. So its not a case of using all the power to the max, but using the power more responsibly. If that makes sense.
Towing my caravan is a delight (not for those behind) but means I can keep a steady 60 up and down hills without any issues.

I am sure that if I became more right footed then all the improvements on MPG would disappear.

As our fishy friend says, it is not all about power but more importantly it is more driveable. The extra stresses you mention would only have a long term effect if you try and use the power all of the time. I had a similar unit on my last FL2 and when I sold it, the mileage was 240,000 miles so I would say that reliability is not an issue. Personally I prefer to drive in sport mode as the gear changes seem even smoother. Cheers,
