I've just compared the vital statistics between these two cars and was amazed to find that the Freelander:

Has a 4 1/2" longer wheelbase
Is slightly longer overall
Is much wider
Is slightly heavier

Though the Range Rover is 1 1/2" taller!

I have no idea what all this proves, other than the fact that I'm sulking because I won't be able to use my Freelander on Gatesgath Pass in The Lake District; you have to have a wheelbase of 100" or less. The Range Rover Classic is 100", the Freelander 104.5"!!

As an aside, does anyone remember the days when the Range Rover wasn't considered to be a "real" Land Rover? Then, subsequently, when the Disco wasn't considered to be a "real" Land Rover / Range Rover?!

Not that I'm bitter and twisted about any of this, you understand!!

Hadn't heard of the Gatesgath Pass before and it sounded interesting until I read the bits in the National Park 'Advice to Users' that say

"There are sharp and steep bends on both sides of the Pass with steep drops in places. The consequences of slipping off the track here are severe" and "...under braking some vehicles have given drivers concern as they slide out of control on the straight downhill sections and on some bends" and "There is no mobile phone contact on the pass. At worst you may have to walk out. Any accident would require specialist recovery"

Maybe it's a good job a Freelander isn't suitable...?

I was told this by a JLR chap when I ordered the FL2 he said "oh and to prepare you for anyone saying its a baby LR or a dinky one, remind them its bigger than the original RR"

I have walked up here several times and didn't believe a vehicle could make it until i saw the Youtube Videos.

All cars have got much bigger, when they get too big they bring a new model lower down the range, which is in fact the same size as the original upper model. Compare a ford focus with a Mk1 escort, aimed at the same market.
unfortunately for the manufacturer to offer an updated model each year with more room, longer wheelbase etc etc the car grows, until it is in the next segment up and they have to bring a new smaller model out. because all cars have grown you only notice it when you see one of the older models next to a newer one. I believe it is one of the reasons our garages are such a snug fit, they are still using the same dimensions they did when thay were built to house an Austin 7, the cars have grown, garage sizes have not.

seems cars need to grow because many many peoples arses are growing too, people should stick to healthy foods such as chicken  At work
