Then what's the point of that switch for first gear?...

Suppose that you have the car on neutral, car moving (downhill) and you slowly rev. the engine from 1000 to 4000 and back. This mean that the ECU will be fooled to think that you've had the car, sequentially, in all gears??? Doubtful...
But who knows, maybe I am wrong... Very Happy Thumbs Up

We are talking here about manual boxes, which are a little subdimensioned for the torque as it is...
Not to mention a tuned-up engine.

An auto is electronically controlled, so, indeed, there is info about the gear number. No need for switches.
But on a manual box, there are only two switches for informing the engine ECU, 1st and Reverse.
Follow the electrical schematics/diagrams and you'll see.

The system is alot cleverer than that. The chances of you getting the revs perfectly right when coasting is very remote. The ECU also knows when the engine is under load.

When your rolling down a hill and trying to match the revs in neutral, the ECU does not register any load. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Indeed, you're right, there is no torque/load. You may be right...
But what about the switch for 1st gear? Why is there? Couldn't they use the same method?
Brainstorming... Very Happy Thumbs Up

Just going back to the original thread...a very respected VAG tuner told me recently that VAG cars have now got a lot harder to map. To put it into perspective in his words, 'the people with the know how of how to get around the firewall protecting the ecu wouldn't waste their time on car remaps...they'd go for internet banking and the like'

I suspect LR have a similar encryption technique on the new cars. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Hello gents,

The latest Land Rovers can indeed be remapped but you have to remove the ECU and map it on the bench.

We have mapped a number of them with great results.

MOD: I'm happy to pay to talk shop here but I can't get a reply from the admin on costs etc so if you could let me know that would be great Thumbs Up

Hi Mav71

We develop our own software.

Sorry for the short response but I don't want to say too much until I can pay for advertising.

Welcome Smile

Are you 100% happy that the Freelander 2's mechanicals are up to the job (ie clutch, gearbox, DMF) with the additional power/torque, especially as failing clutches are a big talking point on the forum.

In a word yes, We've mapped plenty without issue and one of our software engineers had a manual freelander 2 as his own personal vehicle for two years /40,000 miles so we know these cars well.

DMF / Gearboxes / clutches fall apart with or without the help of a remap, I'd advise any client to have a moderate power and torque increase if they have concerns about DMF / Gearbox / Clutch issues.

Thank you for the welcome Thumbs Up

What about JE Engineering or Alive Tuning? - They specialise in LR tunes, would have one done if I could afford the insurance afterwards!
