remeber to charge your spare key fob

Just a reminder for those who havent read their service book to use both key fobs during the year when doing long runs as this process charges the key fob, little bit like an electric tooth brush !

And remember it only charges if placed in with buttons up!

And for those that are interested!

My spare fob wasn't holding charge.

On previous threads I put photos of the insides.

I bought a new battery from fleabay for £8.50

Haven't fitted yet but will go for a long drive and see how it does after that. 2002 Honda VFR800

I've been keen to see what chipset they've used and the charging method.
Any chance of a real close close-up?
Hope the new battery solves your problem.

I'll certainly try my best to get some better snaps or even a scan.

I hope it fixes it too. As I'm told the fob is a one time program so changing the battery shouldn't break it.

Yes, the 'code' will be non-volatile so doesn't rely on power to remember.
I'm interested to know if the 'one-time-program' feature is indeed the case.
Knowing the chipset might give some clues.

2013 fobs do not need charging and cannot be charged.
When the battery starts to run low on power a warning message will appear on the information screen and then it's a simple case of changing the battery following the instructions in the Owners Manual.

Also worth remembering that those older key fobs that need charging need to be inserted with the buttons uppermost!Although the fob will start the car whichever way its inserted, recharging the battery only works when inserted as above!

Another handy tip received from out recent LRE at Rockingham, thanks Mark! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

I don't think it can be. When I bought my FL2 I had one good remote (that opened the doors) and one knackered one (that didn't) although it would work in the holder and allow the car to run - it just wouldn't hold enough of a charge for the remote to work. When I bought a new uncoded remote fob and had it programmed, the new fob worked, the old 'good' fob worked but the old 'bad' fob wouldn't function anymore. If I tried it in the holder it just spat it out. The programmer just said it couldn't be reprogrammed as it was knackered. RE-programmed? Surely if the chips are one-time only, both originals should have still worked in addition to the new one (excluding the remote)? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

My main remote has been playing up this weekend taking several attempts to lock / unlock, this is despite a couple of hours drive on saturday which should have charged the battery.
Tried spare today and this took a couple of attempts to unlock

Is there anything else that goes wrong with the locks apart from the remote (sensor, etc) or will it be time for a new remote (how much are they? can a used 1 be reprogrammed?)

Normally its down to the rechargeable battery needing to be replaced.
New remotes are expensive, hence previous threads about replacing batteries.
Once programmed to a car the remote cannot be reprogrammed to another vehicle.
