2014 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Orkney Grey

Cheers for the suggestions

Get #1 & #2,
#3 spray the area with wd40? And what...hopefully the whine goes? Am I spraying one ancillary at a time to see of the whine goes and there the problem?
#4 done that before....dint find it very satisfying Neutral

Just a note, had a 14 plate FL2 GS from new, loved it BUT new clutch at 8k miles, haldex replaced at 40k....have to love a warranty!! Like this older girl, liking the Ford/Pug engine prices!!

3 = the fact that we all get tempted to get the power wash out and spray the engine bay (used car prep as well). Water gets into places it should not and they need re-lubricating, better than WD40 is the spray the mountain bikers use IMO with the added bits.

Freelander 2 TD4 XS 2007

Thanks for the great guide. I've recently bought a 2007 FL2 XS, 128500 miles, full service history....rev related while and heavy steering at low speeds.

Bled out the power steering system, took me 1.6L of OE fluid and replaced the reservoir. Result is that after 150 miles the steering is easy at all speeds and the whine has gone.

Out of curiosity I took the old reservoir to pieces, sawed it in half! The bottom, including the filter and some of the sides had a 0.5 to 1mm layer of black gunky deposit. Not surprising the pump was sounding starved.

Dont know whether this is a long term fix but here's hoping

South Africa 2008 LR2 TD4 SE Auto Whistler White

Good day everyone,
New to this forum and just needed some advice.
I have a 2008 Freelander 2.2 TD4 Auto, a while ago the steering started to go stiff even when traveling on the highway.
took the vehicle to the dealer, they replaced the power steering pump, but still this did not resolve the issue, they then removed the Rack and bench tested it and reported that it had no fault. they have also checked the reservoir and reported that the filter is perfect, yet still the power steering is stiff, vehicle has now been in for 2 weeks and they cant find me an issue.

Hoping someone has got some further suggestions and possible causes ?

On early vehicles there was an issue with the steering racks. During manufacture weld spatter was left inside which could come loose . Coupled with the mesh size on the reservoir this could lead to blockage and eventual failure of the rack. I believe this was sorted out by 2010. We had the rack, reservoir and pump replaced for 50% of cost as a gesture from LR when the car was 4 years old and under 40000 miles. At standstill the steering was ultra heavy. If you go back through this thread you should find chapter and verse. My gut feel is on a 2008 vehicle it is the rack. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Thanks Martin, even if they bench tested the Rack and it came up with no issue, could it still be the Rack ?

Well if you have a new pump and the reservoir is Ok , there is only the rack left. I must admit I have no idea what a " bench test" would involve, but I'm sure a more qualified member will be along in a moment . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

The reservoir is not a deal breaker on cost, fit one (later modified) and rule it out. Oil is LR specific as well. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi everyone

So my LR2 has been at the workshop for 4 weeks now, they have replaced power steering pump, Rack, Reservoir and hoses. Yet still the steering feels stiff. Any other suggestions as to what could be wrong? CV joints? Any information would really help.

Front suspension is Macpherson struts. Strut top bearing has been known to seize on other models with similar suspension. Failing that, lower ball joints & track rod ends. Nothing else in the system!

Are they using the correct power steering oil ? Thinking outside the box if oil is too thick it may make for heavy steering. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Really good thread on this steering problem; But now I need some help on diagnosing current problem;

2009 Freelander with 117000 on the clock;

Steering sticking and occasionally heavy.
replaced fluid and reservoir, helped but still occasionally sticking when moving off, does this point to a new pump ? or a new rack? which I feel is the problem as no noise from pump;
If a new rack is needed what does that entail/ cost,

Best regards JK

Great thread hopefully it will help with my problem to be solved successfully, I am asking as today I started the car travelled about 4 miles when I heard a whining coming from the car as got further down the road the steering became quite hard, right away I thought power steering, once I had pulled into a parking space I lifted the bonnet to find the power steering fluid was at the minimum.

Lucky for me an Halfords was only a 5 minutes walk down the road purchase power steering fluid, topped up the fluid drove home 3 miles checked and once again fluid low, I think it is there is a leak lower down the power steering hose going into the rack ? I will check tomorrow to make 100% sure but any advise is most welcome thank you.

Is there an upgraded reservoir for the FL 2 now or not ? I added red PAS fluid to top up as that is what was in the reservoir when I purchased the fl2 back in 2017.

Hi Artic,
Yes sounds like a leak; and definitely worth changing the reservoir at this stage,like to know how you get on, as will be giving my whole steering a close inspection, and only want to change/ up grade what is necessary,
Best regards JK
