Travel Pictures

A few pictures of some outback and not so outback excursions

Zig Zag forest west of Sydney, rear wheel in the air. I was following a Disco and a Defender. They were pretty impressed with the FL2 capabilities.

Oodnadatta Track SA at some thermal spring car park (cup and saucer?)

My Jeep at the Cooper Ck ferry crossing on the Birdsville Track. A 1 in 20 year event that the ferry operates. I had to drive out and have a look. 5000kms in 5 days.

600 kms of this is the reason the Jeep was covered in mud. I was on my own so pretty hairy getting through some of it. I would have had to wait a while if I got stuck Smile

On top of Mt Coree in the Brindabellas near Canberra. A magic place on top of the world. If its dry then a car can make it up there. If its wet then my Jeep got bogged and couldn't make it. The mud on the tyres says it was still wet but the FL2 made it quite easily.

The Jeep at Stockton dunes. Its actually on top of a 50 metre dune and the wind was nearly blowing me over. Great fun up there

I'm going out again on a few days over Easter. Don't know where yet but I need to get dirty again.

Mike

I think it was still the standard Goodyears when that photo was taken. I have Yokohama Geolander A/T-s on now and they are great.

PS I forgot to add that the FL2 and the Jeep Grand use the same size tyres which is very handy indeed Smile

Just uploaded a few pics, wasn't as easy as I expected due to timeouts but it worked eventually.

Nice mjfly1. One picture shows a roof rack on rails, whilst the other shows nothing - whats the go there? The rack & rails look very practical compared to the short aftermarket products available. The Mount Hotham piccie makes me envious - I've just had a classic QLD trip where it was brisk in the mornings but otherwise sunny and warm. I must admit though, the radio news reports about early snows down south made me want to take a drive - 15 hours was just too much for a quick look! I've now uploaded a couple into my gallery but the best viewing is the video material where you get a "feel" for the offroading, despite the low quality from the Nokia. Are we able to upload videos for viewing or do we need to use something like YouTube and a link?

The state of the Poplar trees show a big time difference, the Pics without the rails and rack are from last Winter/Spring, the ones with rails, rack, cargo barrier, and tow bar are from this Autumn. Hotham was still cool the first week of spring but the snow was melting and my wife hates the cold, she would rather be up in QLD on the beach any day. Still we will be going back up the mountain this winter, once I get some snow chains sorted out, maybe König K-SUV & Pro - 247 or the K-Summit XXL.

The emphasis on snow chains appears to be rather severe in Vic. For the occasional visitor to the Alpine regions, this is rather extreme and incredibly expensive. I suspect it keeps many a Queenslaner and New South Welshman sticking to the NSW mountains as a consequence where it is 'advisable' but not 'compulsory' for 4WD's to carry snow chains. Given all of the discussion from our Euro friends, the Freelander 2 doesn't appear to need snow chains and is a big part of the high demand over there at the moment. Just added another pic from my trip to the Island Bend last year - didn't have the FL2 though, nor did I rent snow chains but I did have this almighty heavy camper trailer on the back and the officals just waived me thru as though I owned the place!

I'm not sure how we post videos on this forum - it's hard enough to post pictures to My Gallery. Anyhow, I have included links to a couple of YouTube videos I've just uploaded. Note the GS wheels that I had to get on the SD4 in order to fit standard 17inch AT Tyres. By no means did we come across soft, fluffy sand, nor was it dug up following lots of 4WD traffic but it was softer than it looks. I intentionally tried to get into difficulty as I was there with another vehicle and we had adequate recovery equipment. Despite getting stuck once, it was easy enough to get out of without assistance. The "Sand Mode" takes a bit of getting used to, but it's fantastic once you get to know it.

Sorry about the quality - it was taken with my Nokia phone. perhaps I'll get a decent camera with video now that I've got an excuse.

jaksbak, your Nokia phone did a good job!
You might find the following topic helpful :- Seatbelt Beeping sound! in the Tips & Tricks section.
I found it much more pleasant without the seatbelt bonging sound going off all the time and you still have the warning light on the dash for a visual reminder. cheers!
