you fine people are my last resort as this has been going on for almost 3 years now with my 60 Plate Freelander 2.

Scenario of failure:
Fully fuel up, fuel gauge keeps working as expected, i.e. registers fuel being used and drops accordingly whenever we use it. After a while it stays at half way, and we don't use it for long journeys so the lack of movement on the gauge is not unusual for quite a few days. But the problem starts when we go on longer journeys and the gauge has been mis-reading for a time. The reduced engine power warning appears and then stops as the tank is empty. When the filler cap is unscrewed, the suction pressure / hiss is huge.

I started to open the filler at intervals through the week and this seems to help the fuel gauge register the correct fuel level.
The problem doesn't happen if we only fill half or third of a tank, only when a full tank. We have had 2 new fuel tanks and all sensors checked.

The only lead we've heard about is a blocked fuel breather pipe? Also, he said that the fuel filler pipe had tripped meaning that the wrong fuel had been used, but this has never happened.

Any ideas?
