First set of Goodyears 30K + still got 3mm left.
Second set of Goodyears (MT) will not make 25K - but boy do they make a sweet sound.
I you are getting less than 30K on standard tyres I suggest either your teenage son is borrowing the car in the evening, or the steering/transmission is faulty.

27 mpg towing - in my dreams, 27 mpg solo is more like it, can be as low as 23mpg if around town.
1200kg van best ever 24mpg, worst ever 18mpg (to Germany) - it's all down to driving style/traffic - or lack of it Smile

Rear pads didn't last 30K, front pads still OK at 45k, both sets of discs still within limits.
You say the discs need changing - says who?, some garages "play safe" and suggest that discs are changed well before the service limit is reached. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Question:

What is the easiest way to check the brake pads?

Slightly off topic Mav, with the milages that you have done, along with towing also, it seems that towing does not really make a lot of difference to brake wear.

Hopefully that should be one less thing a certain anti Vanner can bleat on about Whistle

I think it all depends on driving style to be honest. A friend of mine who doesn't tow with his FL2 goes through brakes like there was no tomorrow, but he is very hard on brakes.

When I am towing, coming up to junctions, islands etc, I tend to let the car slow down itself and brake when coming up to the obstacle.

I never have been hard of brakes. The orignal brakes probable had 10,000 more miles in them but I decided to change everything.

CG is right, it will have an increased wear effect, but by how much depends on driving style. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

If its an AUTO it will slightly wear the pads out faster, But you should be getting a Good 30k out of a set of tires ??

I tow a van to the only different I can tell is that is use fuel at a faster rate of no more the 27MPG ??

MPG when towing is interesting. Last summer we went to Devon for half term and I really took my time going down and the car did around 28-30mpg.

Coming back it dropped to an average of about 26mpg.

The worst I saw when towing is when we went do the south of France near Spain, full loaded and 3 bikes on the top, she did about 19mpg! Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Reluctantly we have to admit he is correct, Evil or Very Mad (Hate it when he is right) but we knew that you will have more wear and tear anyway, but what I am getting at is that the extra wear is marginal and a half decent driver thith a van in tow could have less wear and tear on the brakes than someone who does not tow but is heavy on the brakes. So when someone has a problem with brake wear not towing is not really the cure Thumbs Up p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I agree with you, although wear will be increased, I think if you take your time it will be minimal. I for sure havent noticed any difference.

I saw a guy at the shell station yesterday, and he has a Jan 2007 FL2 HSE TD4 with 11000 miles on it, and he only used it for towing! It was bought for use only when the caravan comes out. He said to me the longest journey it has had on iots own is just 11 miles! He has not had any negative effects. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather.
