Hi, been lurking on the forum for a while, hoping to find information on a decent AT replacement for the 235/65 17 OEM Wrangler HP's that came on on my 2011 MY GS.

Having read as many relevant topics on here as I could find, it seems that either Cooper Discoverer ATR or the new pattern General Grabber AT might do the job.

Wranglers have been great on road and superb in the snow/ice and am wary of compromising that by going to an AT or ATR. However, I have a smallholding and regularly need to tow a trailer around the place. Unfortunately the HP's are hopeless on the sloping muddy sections so hence the search for a replacement. I don't think it's my off road technique - my 1957 series 1 does this with ease

QUESTIONS:
Anyone got either of the above fitted and how are they on/off road especially in mud?
Anyone know if either of the above are in stock in the UK at the moment?

The Cooper ATR don't comebin 235/65/17

If I recall they are 245/65/17 or 235/70/17

I gave these some thought also, but don't know if either would fit

Thanks for the reply npinks. Cooper UK site shows 235/65 17 in their info pdf file (http://www.coopertire.co.uk/sites/default/files/DiscoATR_technical.pdf). Last time I enquired locally they were on back order but that was a while ago. Anyone else have any actual experience of either of these tyres?

You may also want to look at Toyo Open Country A/T. They are great in winter too.
Or even Toyo Open Country M/T if you like the mud that much...

Have researched extensively on web and honed the list down to the two tyres mentioned in the OP. Namely; Cooper Discoverer ATR or the new pattern General Grabber AT. With possibly Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA as a third option.

Would be good if I could get some feedback from anyone who has fitted any of these three.

(An MT would definitely solve my problem but unfortunately I think too big a compromise on road - typically my usage is 60% on 40% off road where some of the off road is very sticky mud on an incline. Taking a run-up does work but there's a fence either side and one of these days I just know I'll get it wrong )

Then choose one that have aligned longitudinal (around circumference) grooves and/or one or more broad straight around circumference groove to help lateral stability.
So, from my point of view, Cooper Discoverer ATR will take precedence.

I have fitted some 235/70/16 Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA's "all terrain/Silent armour" to a spare set of 16" 'S' rims and have been very surprised at just how quiet and smooth these are on the road. Less noisy than the standard Scorpions and no noticeable rumble through the steering even at 80. So far, I have not seen the reduced MPG I was expecting due to the blocky tread, nor any extra roll when cornering "probably due to the reinforced sidewalls".
Not really had any benefit from fitting yet, as the Scorpion's with only 6000 miles on have behaved impeccably in the 4 inches of snow we've had. I did notice when driving through all the slush that the tread stays very clean compared to the Scorpions which blocked up easily.

All in all I am extremely happy with the Goodyear's and if they made them in 18" to fit my HSE alloys I would fit them permanently.

Thanks Wing for the info on the Wrangler AT/SA. I have a pdf from their site that gives the data/theory but I think first hand comments are worth far more -
it's much appreciated.

AJS4X4 - would be interested to hear when these become available. In the mean time do you know of any customers who bought the last batch that could comment on how they're finding them. Especially in mud ?

We have only had a few F2 customers take the time to call us re the new General AT, so far all very happy.

Will try to get some Testimonals on our web site as and when.

They are not going to be as good as an MT/R, but maybe the next best, we have tested on D3's vs the Pirelli ATR and we would say the General had better grip, but I would say that wouldn't I.

Getting a little off with supply on these General AT's, we could sell loads if we had them.

Sizes available so far are as follows; 255/65x16, 265/70x16, 235/85x16, 235/65x17, 255/60x18, 255/55x19, 275/40x20 and 275/45x20, more to follow soon we hope.
