Supermarket Diesel

After reading on this forum about diesel prices and how much we are
paying to fill our vehicles, let me ask this question....

After speaking to a customer the other week and him telling me that
he never fills up at the supermarket. Supermarket diesel is high
in octane, this makes it much cheaper and it also makes it burn faster.

Is this correct ??????

Local supermarket diesel price is around £1.32 and BP / Shell £1.36 ish.

The last two tanks of diesel I've used have been Shell and I think I'm
getting more miles per tank.....or I'm I losing my mind.. Laughing

No octane in diesel. It's cetane for starters!

Some people believe, and I think there's some substance to it, that the premium brands, Esso, BP, Shell etc have slightly better quality fuel than the supermarkets. I put Morrisons diesel in my Leon and it played havoc with the DPF which suggested it burnt less cleanly.

Usually I put Sainsbury's diesel with Millers in every other tank if the supermarkets are significantly cheaper than the fuel companies.

Also, on my bike, if I use supermarket fuel, it sounds completely different through the exhausts compared to BP and Shell, and runs slightly less economically on the supermarket stuff. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I only use shell or shell V Power now, it is a few pence more expensive than the supermarket poo but i get better MPG smoother running and better pick up, also no thick black smoke out the exhaust. You have to ask the question when you use the super market fuel, if that much black smoke comes out the exhaust whats it doing to the inside of the engine, exhaust etc etc. I can never understand why people spend thousands of pounds on there cars and then put the cheapest fuel in they can find, dont make sense to me. But each to there own Thumbs Up

Also I will add, that the higher the octane no. (in petrol) and cetane no. (in diesel) the more flammable it is, which is why better quality fiuel such as ultimate, and v-power, have higher values Thumbs Up Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Hi Guys,

See my thread on biodiesel. I used to always run on Shell or BP but this year have also used Jet. I filled up once in Tesco and had the engine go into reduced power mode - it was -19 at the time but I've never had this happen before with main brand fuels - it may have been coincidence but??

Weather you buy from shell, BP or anywhere else in the uk there is a minimum standard for all fuels sold at the pump.
The real reason fuel is cheaper at the big supermarkets is because they make very little at all. Its just another to get youin their stores.
They want you to have another reason to shop there, hence "why not fill up your car and shop at the same time.
Theres methood in there reasoning and it seems to be working very well. Thumbs Up

I fill up at the same morrisons pumps as Sir Ken, he seem to trust his product in his FFRR, or his chauffeur does anyway. his driver fuels up while Ken prowls the store, helping people spend more money, last time I saw him he was buying a new roasting dish Confused
And like a certain scone dodging forum member he enjoys a fry up in his cafe too. At work

I go to Tescos get my points on the clubcard and also on my tesco credit card, points make prizes

Only local shell garage is a few miles away, noticed a slight improvement when filling up there but not worth extra miles driving there and back Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

The fuel comes out of the same refineries. If you ever drive past the Stanlow oil refinery at Ellesmere Port you will see tankers coming out of there with Shell, Esso, Morrisons, Tesco etc written on their side.

I noticed a difference in mpg when using branded fuel of around 2 to 3 mpg awhile back, so early last we asked our drivers at work to only use branded fuel and not to use supermarket fuel, for the first few days we saw little difference, but after three or four days mpg was on the up we went from getting 28, 29 mpg on our vehicles which are 2.5 litre panel vans, we then started getting 31 to 32 to the gallon. We then asked half of them to go back to the supermarkets where possible and the mpg went back down again after two weeks we went back on branded and mpg went up. We now only use branded and if possible Shell if not BP, but with BP you do tend to pay top dollar £1.42.9 Shocked today at Warwick where as yesterday at Todhills £1.31.9 but BP on the south side £1.36.9 how can two garages opposite vary so much Question

So whilst I do tend partake in one of Ken's fine feast's, I do give his fuel a miss. I only had the breakfast in the pupose of science. Still awaiting to be invited for scones again though Whistle p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
