AutoBox

Manual gives very little info so can anyone help please:

1. Is autobox adaptive (or ECU) i.e. learning your driving style?
2. If so can it be returned to default?
3. I find it difficult to change UP with the throttle pedal in some circumstances cos the 'mapping' of the autobox can sometimes promote a downshift - it assumes to want to slow down?

Think I am right in saying we have an Aisin TF-80SC Box?

Hi Sam,

Its definitely an adaptive gear change although I have not managed to find out if it can be reset (like on the BMW ZF box)

As you say I think you need to get used to the box (and vice versa) to get it to drive the way you want it. I think i’m in tune with mine now and it rarely catches me out... the trick (for me at least) to get it to go up is to get up to speed (don’t fanny about – be positive) and then when you have reached the right speed – ease of the gas but not so much that you completely take your foot of the throttle, this usually is enough to get it to go up the box.

NB I’ve noticed the gears hold quite long compared to others i have driven (have to be doing 50 – 60 to get into 6th) but I think this is todo with the fact the box tried to keep you on the torque as much as possible

Failing that – use command shift

Yes, you are right.
It's a Aisin Warner AWTF-80 SC.

Useful - thanks. Whilst I am on a roll (!):

1. When cold does the torque converter stay in 'slipping' mode longer per gear change?
2. Do we have a 'lockup clutch' in our autoboxes?

..and finally and nothing to do with autoboxes:

Does a diesel engine use more fuel compared with its normal consumption than a petrol engine when both are cold?

I think lockup only happens in 5th and 6th dont it Question Question

As for the consumption thing - my personal view is that until warm a diesel is only 50% efficient and takes a lot longer to warm, petrols on the other hand are not so thirsty when cold and warm up a damn sight quicker Shocked Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Wikipedia strikes again "One aspect of the advanced nature of the electronics is at idle, it automatically selects neutral gear to reduce internal temperatures and improves fuel economy." - mine for sure doesn't, stop at the lights and select neutral and the engine revs increase briefly as the load is removed. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

FL1 used to do this, but on FL2 only MY11 model do this, shame, everyone else have to push it to neutral manually. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto
