Tragic death: Jimmy Girvan was a double Scottish rally champion

A former Scottish champion rally driver has been killed and his navigator injured during an event in Perthshire.

Jimmy Girvan, 56, who was from near Inverness, died in the crash near Aberfeldy during the Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally.

The accident happened shortly before 1pm on Saturday when the car Mr Girvan was driving left the road after colliding with boulders and crashed into trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mike Ramsay, Mr Girvan’s navigator, was cut free from the car and treated before being taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Police said his injuries were not serious.

The section of road where the crash took place was closed to allow police investigators to examine the scene and safely remove the rally car. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal, and the Health and Safety Executive has also been informed.

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing in Tayside, said: "Our thoughts are with Jimmy's family, friends and wider motor sport community at this very sad time."

The rally is held in memory of Scottish rally champion Colin McRae. He was killed in a helicopter accident in 2007, along with his young son, Johnny, and two friends.

Organisers immediately cancelled the event after the accident as a mark of respect to Mr Girvan, who twice won the Scottish rally championship in a 27-year career.

In a statement, Coltness Car Club said: "Jimmy was an ebullient and popular member of this close-knit sport and was regarded as a superb ambassador for motor sport. We'll all miss him terribly."
