strange noise

Hi folks,been a while since i last posted but i wondered if anyone might be able to help?when i`m driving at any speed and i lift off the throttle then apply it again.i get a sort of grating sound,this does`nt happen at any other time!Any idea`s as to what it might be?cheers MY2009 2.2 td4 se

When you say 'lift then re-apply', how quickly are you putting your foot back, and how hard. Revs would be helpful as well. We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!

Hi,thanks for replying.i would say about 3/4 of a second,maybe a little more.it then makes a sort of metallic whirring,grating sound which goes away after a split second.Hard to explain the noise exactly,seems to be when its taking up drive again.auto box by the way.anymore helpful to you,cheers. Revs are`nt high,1500-2500 max.no shunt or anything and the box changes nice and smoothly MY2009 2.2 td4 se

England 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Rimini Red

hi, if you have an auto it's probably the turbo overboost protection which does sound very disconcerting, if you have a manual i would look underneath at the heat shield over the front propshaft, this is prone to being bent back by for example driving through water etc. and then fouls the propshaft making the noise you describe. iy is easily bent back by hand, but wait til it's cooled down.

In my case it wasn't the front shield, but the middle one. FL2, TD4 HSE
