Cheap Servicing - Whats the Catch

Anyone used K Motors - Independent Land Rover Centre? See www.kmotors.co.uk

First service £169.95 second service £189.95.

Have booked them for my first service but would welcome any views on them. (Bit nervous about using them rather than a main dealer.)

Thanks

Local Dealer wants £346. Told him about the Independent and he just laughed and said that the oil alone costs over £80 and if you don't use it your warranty will be invalid hence my concern. Trouble is I just feel that you cannot trust any of them.

Mate of mine owns a specialist independant where alot of ex LR dealership staff go to work when they're fed up of working in a franchise. He's got similar prices, and it doesn't invalidate the warranty.

Green Oval Garage, their website shows similar pricing. The big difference is that main dealers charge about 3x as much for labour. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

This all makes your blood boil doesn't it !! .......... the dealer will have us believe that F(dealer)SH adds value but from my experience this isn't the case as long as its serviced using approved parts the independant will probably provide a better service. I have experienced this with Merc & audi in the past.

Anyone any experience anything contrary to my opinion?? 2010 FL2 XS Auto in Santorini Black with HSE alloys

Yes it does! The only time I've heard of a dealer history being of any benefit whatsoever is when a couple of people have had vehcles just out of warranty and something catastrophic happens...with a dealer history they tend to be a bit more sympathetic. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Up to 3 years old I would always pay more for a vehicle with dealer history. After 3 years it will probably go through the auction, and as long as it's a specialist it unlikely to make a difference.

If you change <3yrs then you'll get back the additional cost of the servicing in PX value.

Very roughly, if I was offered a 2007 TD4 SE Automatic then I would probably underwrite it at £500-£750 less if the history was not Land Rover main dealer.

Conversly, if a vehicle was bought from one dealer and the book was stamped by the dealer for each service (i.e. it had only been to the one dealer who would have the entire history) then it would probably be worth £250-£500 more (especially if it was supplied and serviced by us).

The above is a little difficult to explain in the written word, therefore I hope it makes sense?

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

My main argument with dealer at last service on my 08 (now gone) GS auto was oil price,
they charged 13 units at £4.75 +vat, when I asked for an explanation "thats the way the parts dept charge it"
Oil capacity is 5.8litre so if 1 unit is 0.5L they are charging for 6.5L,
I asked if this was for 0.5l to be left in car for top up NO was the answer.
I asked for oil specification and if I could buy 1 litre and was told "its shell and we don't sell litres"

That and arguments about additives resulted in 15% discount on bill. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

Thanks James ...... Doesn;t mean anything to lets say an Audi dealer if you decide to change to one of their cars though conversley I dare say someone PX'ing an audi with yourselves wouldn't really matter who serviced it the PX car, everytime I've p/x'd, inc my new FL2, the dealer has merely asked is SH is present etc and not actually bothered to check. 2010 FL2 XS Auto in Santorini Black with HSE alloys
