I have a TD4 with a 6 manual gearbox, I was towing our 1350 kgs caravan today (first time with the freelander) and I found that whilst crusiing along the motorway at 60 mph, the car just seemed happier in fifth gear compared to than when I was up into sixth gear.

What gear do you use?

I use 4th & 5th gears and slip into 6th when possible, which in on the downhills or flat sections

Thanks, on the flat (9 mile stretch) in sixth gear the car sat at 1500 revs and the engine just seemed to be labouring, but on the return same strech of road I stayed in fifth gear and 2000 revs and the car just felt and sounded better? if this makes any sense - But during the 2 hour test tow (sounds sad ) I averaged 26.5mpg

Have just towed my 1500kg caravan 300 miles up from Cornwall.
Yes, you do need to be doing near on 60mph to usefully use 6th, but I had a clear run and was able to leave it in 6th for miles at a time unless there was a hill in the way, and it averaged 27.1mpg towing, and that was with 4 in the car as well
