No boost on low fuel

I decided to drive the 16 mile trip home today with 18 miles left in the tank according to the computer. Closer to home on A38 whilst doing 70ish in 6th the comp now showed 2 miles left and suddenly there was no power. I welded my foot to the floor, changed down to 5th but to no avail. Given the amount of fuel left this is of course the obvious reason for the lack of power. I filled up at the garage near my house and it took a little bit more driving before the power returned. Have any of you guys ever ran the car this low on fuel and had this issue?

P.S, Lesson learnt the hard way, fill up before letting it get that low Embarassed Laughing LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

happen to me once, Mrs G asked me to fill the car with fuel, I said "cant you fill it next time your out, no need for a special trip"

She won the arguement, and when I saw the range'o'meter on 3 miles when we live 4+ miles from fuel, I knew why Evil or Very Mad her last trip out had taken her right past the fuel Rolling Eyes

Car went into slow mode for last mile, but was fine after I added fuel.

apparently the car goes to slow to warn you its about to stop the engine. it wont let itself run out of fuel totally as that may damage the common rail injection At work

I've been unlucky enough, or stupid enough depending on how you look at it, to have this happen while travelling up the M4 of all places....if I applied the throttle it would cough and no power. Knew it was 'cause of short fuel and was fine once off the motorway and found a station. The last 3 or 4 miles finding a station was in 'very slow' mode, I even waved a few people past Laughing

Not allowed it to get so low again since....funnily enough Thumbs Up

Vehicles with diesel engines are equipped with a system to prevent the fuel tank from emptying completely. When the fuel reaches a minimum level, the system will activate a reduced power mode (i.e. the engine will not run properly). This will be followed by the engine stopping in approximately 1.6 km (1 mile).
This feature prevents the fuel system from running dry, which could cause damage to the vehicle. If the gauge indicates low fuel or the warning indicator illuminates, the fuel tank should be refuelled as soon as possible at the next filling station, with at least 4 litres (0.9 gallons) of fuel.
