when stopped atg a jucntion etc, the idle speed is around 1150, and takes up to 5 seconds to return to around 750.

this also means that I am braking against the engine when slowing down and in gear
not good

anyone have any ideas, before I take to to the Stealer in Lewes? 

Mine's been doing the same recently but didn't used to?
Can't explain it. There's probably an ECU firmware revision by now.

drove to lr in lewes, they had the car all day - and could not fault it -- bl00dy tw@ts
it 'faulted' as soon as i picked it up

strange cos when the weather was cold it used to under rev, now its warm it over revs 

Sounds to me like a mixture problem! Should be easy to identify!

For those who have the problem with high RPM, a question: do you have a DPF?
Because if you do, then this high RPM (when engine is warm) could be one of the phases of DPF auto cleaning.
Many engine ECUs rise the idle speed when attempting a self clean of the DPF.

mine is doing the same (pauzes at 1000 rpm before going down @ 750 rpm) and this since the first day. In cold temp it's less than now (warm) and I was told that this is normal... I have NO DPF, and was told that the DPF has nothing to do with this... heard, not official, that it's because they reduced the idle speed as low as possible (less polluting) and going that low directly risks to stop the engine. so, instead the idling down goes in steps... (not a official explanation of a LR technicien, but a guy who knows engines) Fl2 zermattsilver TD4 S man

If you don't have DPF, indeed, the DPF has nothing to do with this...
But with a DPF, in order to clean it, the EGT (exhaust gases temperature) must be raised up to 650 degrees in order to clean (burn, more likely) the particles inside the DPF.
This is done by modifying the injection process (adding a post injection phase, after the combustion stroke), restricting the air intake (for slower combustion and for a slower speed of the exhaust gases) and, of course, by raising a bit (for efficiency) the idle speed.
So who told you that a DPF regeneration has nothing to do with raised idle speeds, no offence, must read some more... The web is full with explanations of the process.

ok checked my VIN
8th letter is a B so I should not have a DPF.....

My 07 did not do this until it had a software upgrade about a year ago. Now it does it at every junction and robot (sorry -traffic light )
Vehicle was in dealers yesterday for three year service and they still say there is no problem and that the software upgrade is nothing to do with it. So I guess thats it unless you guys come up with something from UK dealers.

Hi everyone , new to this site so please go easy with me . with response to the idle speed problem , I had the same with my 07 XS. I took it to the dealers after reading on this site about software needing a fix. I quoted this site to the dealers and the fix I had read about and low and behold after putting a software update on to the ECU the problem stopped.It has been fine since (about 5 months).Hope this helps

As mine does it too anychance you could post deatils of the software fix used - ref number or something so i can ask the dealers for the same  freelander 2 SE black and beige - now sold

I will try and find out for you. When the fix was done they told me there were some errors also on the ecu but they didn't give me a print out of them. They should have a record of this I would have thought as it was warranty work so i will speak to them and try to get some info for you.
