oil change at first service : beware oil level

I had my first service last week at a main dealer at just over 8000mls.

everything seemed ok until I checked the oil level on returning home........it was about 8 to 10mm above the max on the dipstick.

in relative terms it didn't seem that much so I thought I would leave it "to burn off"

but it was bugging me and yesterday I thought I would remove the excess, which turned out to be 600ml !!

now I'm glad I did and hope no damage has been done...........so remember to check your level after a service.

Good advice, about half the time when i get a vehicle back from a service something isn't quite right...when I got my bike back a few weeks back from Triumph I got a call the next day asking if I was ok, and to check the rear axle nut...it was only finger tight! And i'd done nearly 200 miles on it.

Back to the FL, I though they had a system that dropped oil into the exhaust if it was overfilled so it can be burnt off harmlessly? Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Hi Dave, I'm not sure about that system, but certainly would like to know if it does exist.

what gets me is they spend time washing, painting tyres, etc, etc and they can't get the important things right !!

Ye exactly, doesnt help with confidence in my opinion.

Ah well, I haven't trusted anyone with our vehicles for a long time, apart from a couple of mates that have their own garages! Good spot though.

I think I read about it in the owners manual some time ago, although I could be getting mixed up with our old Disco 3. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I don't imagine that an overfill nowadays would cause as much damage as say 20 - 30 years ago, but to me it's just basic stuff..........if it takes 5L you put 5L in, and not 5.5L.

if they can't get the basic stuff right, what chance with the more technical ?

oil levels

An oil dipstick is only a guage for the oil amount in your engine. Your car should be sat on level ground & idealy cold when you dip it. You should first take it out, wipe it and redip for your level.
Having some oil more than you need in the engine wont hurt as long as theres not a large amount. The more oil in there then the greater the oil presure there will be at highter engine revolutions, this at worst will put a lot of strain on the engine and probably blow out your oil seals etc.
If you have filled it up too much then theres a real chance your big end bearings are going to rotate in to the oil in the sump causing damage. I once looked at my father in laws car when he told me the oil was coming out of the top.
On further investigation, he had keep on filling up with oil untill it came out of the rocker cover, i could not beleive my eyes, then the laughter started & i couldnt stop. To think some one could be so daft but i guess it takes all sorts.

yes, what happens is the crankshaft/big ends hit the oil and cause it to foam so that it cannot do it's job of lubricating the engine.

and also as you say there is increased oil pressure which can damage seals, etc

all in all not a good idea to overfill !!

Oh yes he keept on filling untill it came out of the rocker cover filler, then he called me Bow down If you imagine your crankshaft running through 5 main bearings and the four conrods "conecting rods if you like" connected to the crankshaft via the big end bearings then all running trying to push and pull the pistons but each one crashing into a sea of oil. Not going to work for long is it, BIG DAMAGE VERY SOON. Shocked Embarassed

I hope that both of you are kidding, right?
About the fact that more oil will translate in a higher oil pressure at higher engine RPM...
Laughing Laughing Laughing
The pressure in the oil circuit is given only by the pump output and not by the oil level...
For example if you aspire water from a lake with a pump and the lake level is rising this mean that you can aspire/pump more water? No. The debit of the pump will be the same. For each and any RPM.

Alex, the engine is designed to operate with so much oil, if have too much oil in the system it must result in increased pressure which will damage seals, etc

unlike a lake with a pump the engine is a sealed system, (although there is a breather) and although the pressure through the oil pump may remain the same, there will be an increase in the overall pressure in the crankcase..........................simples

Also if the oil level is high then the crankshaft could hit the oil when it rotates splashing oil everywhere, again engine is not designed for this and could leak from somewhere.
When I had my FL1, after service from the main dealer I found the oil level to be around 1cm higher then the level, went back and the workshop manager tried to convince me that its OK and that its going to burn off. I just asked why then LR would have a max limit and he took the car in and removed the excess oil.... Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto
