checked today and the coolant was low, so topped it up with water to the max point (1pint in total)

Will be keeping a eye on it and have them investigate at service if required

I'll have to remember to check antifreeze level too before the next cold spell Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I seem to get the low coolant message whenever the vehicle is parked on a slope (which is most of the time where I live). Is this a common issue?

@clinkerhull

I would say that it's common to check the coolant level, and add up if low for all cars. Whistle

If you see the message frequently after checking it, then a dealership visit is needed. 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

Dont know about youz, but a while back I got a service notice to bring in my LR2 to have a modification done to a possible coolant line leak.

Yes, but that service action (Q081) is specific to i6 gasoline engine.
Most of the people here have TD4 diesel engine.

Obviously it's a pressurised system but is there an overflow? if you park on a steep slope maybe that's where the coolant has gone?

Did you resolve your coolant problem in 2009?! I have topped up four times in four months in less than a thousand miles. Can't find a leak anywhere.

Would appreciate any feedback from dealership Kurt

That sounds like a possible head gasket or cracked head. Either pressurising through the expansion tank or blowing through the exhaust. Check for white smoke in exhaust when engine hot, and get the system pressure-checked. Doesn't seem to be a common problem from what I've read on here though. It's a known problem on the TD5.
First thing I'd do though is change the expansion tank cap, in case the spring is weak.

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Baltic Blue

Hi there Pastmaster

Thanks for lightning response Very Happy

Yes I had a dreadful feeling that the gasket may have gone, but had it pressure tested by a very good friend who is a mechanic and had it for a full day ( no charge!).

Topped up with pure xlc coolant. He doesn't suspect a blown head gasket the car has only done 26000 miles. Very frustrating. Have just purchased some coolant uv dye and a uv light to look for it, but will also look at the dyes which detect gases in the coolant for a blown head gasket. From experience the head gasket if blown will produce white smoke ( none showing) and pink a lot. Had a merc that blew the gasket but the coolant was going straight out of the exhaust.

Have seen reports on FL2s that have had coolant issues with replacement of EGR valve, coolant level sensor, hose pipe, hose clip from expansion tank...the list is endless.

Will buy a new cap and hope it is a cheap problem...if it is the cap would I not see coolant residue?

Thanks again

Cagliere

Mmm can't relax until I find the problem Kurt

I get the steering column lock msg once in a while for no reason. Happens after startup but doesn't affect steering at all. The msg goes away after a few mins. Need to get it checked out at my second service, but not sure if they'll find the problem since it's intermittant. Anyone know the real problem?
