If you don't want to go with one that sits on a tow bar thne go for a Thule 3 bike rear mount eg:Thule BackPac 973. Thule do seem to get the best strength, stability, durability and safety marks in benchmarked tests against other manufacturers according to the German ADAC motoring organisation:

I've got a high mount 3 bike carrier from good old Halfords...£50 pounds (approx) in the sale. Works a treat but I wouldn't fancy doing 'Grand tours' with it...fine for short trips |
