2nd Service for '08 SE in Edinburgh area

My '08 plate SE is due it's second service soon (although the first service was performed by the Dealers before I bought it at only 4k). It's only got 17.5k on it and I'm being quoted £360 from LandRover dealers in Edinburgh. I searched around 'tinternet and came across a company called ServicingStop (www.servicingstop.co.uk). These guys are offering a Service for £265, performed to Manufacturer standards and therefore maintaining the warranty, and including a free pickup and drop off. Still pricey I know, but still £95 cheaper than the main Dealer.

Has anybody used these guys and if so, what was your opinion? I'd be particularly interested if anyone in the Edinburgh area has used them.

if you phone around a few dealers for a quote you should be able to get the price down a good bit.

even phone dealers in Glasgow............then go back to your dealer of choice and they will probably match the price from the other dealer. ( unless there is some kind of Edinburgh dealer cartell !! )

I think it's best to use the Landrover dealers for a service until the warranty expires.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll give a couple more Main Dealers a shout and se if I can get a better deal. However, your responses regards using Main Dealers raise a different question, which is 'Why?' If an Independent Garage can do a service using OEM parts to Land Rover 'standard' without impacting the Warranty, why the requirement to use a Land Rover specialist?

no "legal" requirement or anything, but if you do need warranty work done it is more straightforward if you have been using a Landrover dealer for servicing.

but nothing to stop you going elsewhere if you want to save a few bob

Iain

ps the "Landrover Specialist" would probably know what they are doing and hopefully have right tools/experience, etc to carry out the work properly.

i have always used independent specialists the theory is they have a better knowledge of your car than someone that deals with every marque. Specialists normally are staffed by ex-dealer technicians and so are fully trained on that marques product range. When i last had mine serviced they were able to produce a list of three items which needed rectification on warranty and so i was able to take to the dealer and explain exactly the problem and desired solution.

Also the stamp in the service book says land rover specialist, so whilst not as bulletproof as a full dealer service history still better than a generic stamp

If you buy a car for say 20k & try & save £90 buy having a back street garage service it, your mad the LAND ROVER stamp in your service book will be worth more than that.

Having spent last 25 years in Ford Franchised Dealers (retired for 5 years) and have well stocked toolbox in garage I still know the benefits of Dealer Service so pay the price for mine.
I do ask for details of costs, do NOT pay for windscreen wash fluid £2.50, non Land Rover Additive £14.50, oil price, My invoice showed 13units at £4.50???? how does 5.9 lit equate with 13??? stealers gaining 1 unit from overcharge as I assume 1 unit is 1/2 lit.
In the event of a major component failure where service done outwith franchise Land Rover are entitled to ask for FULL VAT invoice from service garage also copy invoice from garage showing purchase of genuine LR parts. They can also ask for proof that your car was serviced to LR schedule and copy of check list.
Dont want to frighten anyone, this is worst case scenario. But s--t happens.
There is also (if you are keeping car over 3years old) the question of "goodwill warranty" in certain circumstances. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

Pentland charged me £350 (inc the £10 for a loan car) for my 2nd Service. I'd tend to agree that it's probably better to keep it in the dealer system (having said this our wee Smart is serviced by the independant Saab specialist I used to use for my Saab - in my experience the Mercedes customer service had to be experienced to be believed and put me off even considering a Merc). Can help resale later on as well. If your comparing prices there's also Stratstone in Cupar (again not that far). I heard that the Edinburgh Stratstone is closing and that Pentland will be moving to larger premises, don't know how true this is though.

Edinburgh Dealers..

I have heard that Stratstone have lost the Franchise for Land Rover, so the only Dealer within the Town will be Pentland. Not impressed with what I had heard about Stratstone anyway, certainly not impressed with Stratstone Perth. Very happy with my experiences at Pentland though (limited, since I only bought the car in June, but had warranty issues immedietely along with another couple of niggles, but all sorted out well.) FL2 HSE Tonga Green and Clio Sport 182 (Hers!)Milltek exhaust ,Speedline Turinis.
