Handbrake Fault

Hi Guys,

I got my first Freelander 2 - MY10 Black Manual TD4 XS_e - in August (Dealer Ex-Demo) and have been loving it ever since.

Recently though it has been rolling back on hills with the handbrake on unless it is at the very highest point, the last 'click' as it were - has anyone else experienced this problem? Any solutions other than getting the dealer to look at it?

Would love to know any of your thoughts or solutions.

Just explain to the dealer that's it not holding on a hill and been a off roader it's a vital piece of equipment that should be work

they should adjust it for free, my old dealer did about 6 time till another dealer looked at it Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Thanks for the supper quick reply npinks.

I will give the dealer a call in the morning and see if I can get it booked in. I need to get the centre pillar replaced where the seat belt is digging into it anyway.

Mine is a 2010 model year & I don't think my handbrake is that clever either but I allways leave it & my other cars in gear if parked on a hill. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

I always adjust mine so it's full on in 5 clicks, take the handbrake off, take out the coin tray between the seats twiddle the adjuster, you only need fingers, then try it again

I don't know if things have changed on the later Freelander 2's but the handbook actually states that you should also leave it in gear when parking.

PARKING BRAKE
Parking on a slope
Facing uphill
If the vehicle is parked facing uphill, select first
gear (manual gearbox), or Park (automatic
gearbox), and turn the steering wheel so that
the front wheels face away from the kerb.
Facing downhill
If the vehicle is parked facing downhill, select
reverse gear (manual gearbox), or Park
(automatic gearbox), and turn the steering
wheel so that the front wheels face towards the

I will have a look and try to adjust it before I give the dealer a call then. I usually make sure I leave the car in gear when parking on a hill, but it becomes a problem when trying to do hill starts.

Did you performed the bedding-in procedure on your parking brake?
For sure most of you don't and it didn't come from factory with it done...

There are two possibilities, the last one being more accessible:
1. On a dynamometer: Apply the parking brake lever for approximately 40 seconds, a braking force of 800 Nm must be obtained.
2. On a road test: At approximately 24 mph (40 km/h), apply the parking brake lever until a braking force can be felt. Apply the parking brake lever by one further notch and drive for 400 meters (440 yards).

Then readjust the parking brake, as Tandemman said.

I too have had the feeling of not braking correspondingly and I've done the bedding in.
It's much much better now.

I`m curious why when the hand brake is applied on a hill and the foot brake released why does the car rock downhill on its suspension it feels as if rubber bushes are worn (radius arms or something)

Hi chaps
had a similar problem with my handbrake recently - not holding and we have some fairly steep hills where I live.

Took it back to the dealers and was told that a new procedure had just been issued (Oct 09)
They re-adjusted and it was OK for a while..... then.....Maybe I should do it myself?
Might be worth mentioning the new procedure when you take it in? There's always a way forward!

I picked up a 11MY GS auto last week and the only disappointment is the handbrake. Is the above procedure something I should do? I don't want to risk any damage on a new car. Andyfr

If you don't believe it, you can always pay a fee for a subscription to TOPIX and look for procedure 70.40.12 - Parking Brake Shoes Bedding-In, on the FL2's workshop manual.
