Topics on tyres keep coming up, but I still none the wiser.

Looking at having some Goodyear MT/Rs on 17" wheels. Is there anything that prevents this from being done (I'm thinking insurance, warranty etc.. ). These are to be a second set of wheels to complement the normal go anywhere providing it is good quality tarmac 19" wheels! For green lane (off) road and snow use.

Any views?

Nothing. I have a set of 18" for summer use and full M+S 17" for winter use. As long as theyv'e got 1.6mm of tread then the plod should be happy Freelander 2.2e HSE , Privacy, Fully debadged, 19" Chrome SHadow alloys

what speed rating for 17" winter tyres? 236/65 r17 ????

not going to get out of my street till its cleared about 3" of snow fallen since 7am with a good coating of slush under it,

I think the FL2 will cope, but the roads are grid locked and even the main roads are snow covered

Your supposed to keep the manufacturers rating so that's a 'V' rating good for 150 mph plus there's something about the load rating as well to consider.

I'm sure your insurance company would be happy to reject any claim you had if you fitted a set of non standard tyres and had an incident.

This makes a mokery of fitting a set of cheap and cheerfull nobbly tyres for the snow - despite the fact that they would be significantly better.

I have a feeling that winter tyres are a tad more expensive than summer tyres here But then they put all sorts of taxes on anything that saves lives Studded tyres (that you cant use in the UK) do have an extra tax when purchasing and you have to pay extra road tax in some larger citys for using them there.

If you do go for winter tyres in the UK you may find it interesting to check out the Scandinavian test reports for the different makes and compair that with the ones you consider getting yourself.

When I first moved here many moons ago, I got some used winter tyres from the car dump. They were worn, narrow and half the studs were missing and they realy looked stupid on my 3 litre Capri. However it would have been impossible to drive through the winter without them. What I am saying here is any winter tyre will be better than without in slippery winter conditions regardless of what the test reports may say anyway.

I checked a website that gives legally allowed tyres for car make/model.

Fl2 diesel gives:
235/65 R17 104V

Ah the 3 litre Capri - how it brings back fond memories. Particularly good at painting circular black tyre lines all over the local supermarket car park
.....and it was always a gamble as to whether you would be facing in the right direction when leaving a roundabout in a hurry

so a quick internet search and there is no V rated winter tyres, suprise suprise

steep hill , caravan on tow, brakes get hot , 150 mph is a distinct possibility, until you reach a corner . not the ideal time to get a blow out so V rated is required (also a plastic bag on the seat to prevent 'stainage' At work

there lie the problem, No V Rated Tyres availible appart from the Conti's that are on it at the moment or the Wranglers on my spare set of 17's

Not risking invalidating my insurance by putting H rated Winter tyres, and can't be bothered ringing them at the moment
