How can this be so. I drove up the M6 tonight, and each stretch of "Roadworks" (nowt occuring) had signs above it to the effect that they had narrowed the lanes for my safety. This is simply preposterous . How can it be safer if the merest swerve from some F***wit in another lane puts me in jeapardy?
Had there been people working there, I could see that it would be for their safety, but please... Indus Silver

They have sections of Motorway with average speed cameras set to detect anyone averaging more than 50. Ergo, it keeps people at 50, unless one is unable to understand the concept of average. As it was, most people do less than 50, and traffic was nose to tail.
They would be better off reducing the three lane motorway to 2 lanes, then there is room for some error.
Doing 50 in narrowed lanes is dangerous, not for my safety.

People's brains tell them to slow down when they see the road ahead narrowing, this theory is used in speed calming measures in housing estates by use of traffic islands. A lot of people are not able to judge the width of their vehicles very well ! and so slow down to avoid colliding with the islands?

When you are driving along a street with parked vehicles on each side of the road and meet a car coming the other way the majority of people will slow down when passing the oncoming vehicle although there is ample room to pass each other.

Narrow lanes in theory make people slow down and take more care to avoid colliding with the car in the next lane?

Clear as mud now ???

But mate were not talking about a housing estate, were talking about a motorway some people can't even drive in a straight line on a good day never mind on a motorway doing 50 MPH.
