Heater Efficiency

Is it just my Freelander or does anyone else feel that the heat pumped out to the front footwells is disappointing?
The heat and strength of the fan blowing it out via the screen and dashboard vents is more than adequate, but I always feel that the strength of the fan to the footwell is much less efficient, even when I direct everything down there by switching off the screen and dash.

Coincidentally, I've been paying some attention yesterday to heating issues as I don't think my supplementary electric heater (PTC) is doing it's job. I did as you did and directed heat to the footwells and, like you, was disappointed with the strength of flow. I think it's perhaps because it is diffused over a wider area to prevent hotspots, but overall, my heating system is not very impressive - a fact that becomes more apparent at this time of year.

Thank god its not just me thinking this then, thought I would need to get someone to look at it for me. I normally have the fan blowing on the setting of 3, and at that setting I never feel anything coming from the footwells.

2 replies in lest than 15 minutes confirming my feelings - at least I'm not going mad! Smile
Proplus - Have you tried the following:-
Put heater control to hottest setting, turn fan to full blast, then alternately direct the hot air to the screen only, then the dash vents only and finally to the footwell only.
The first two settings seem to belt the heat out, but it just doesn't seem to be as strong or as hot through the footwell... Big Cry

Mine is due for yet another service in January, so think I will ask them to investigate and comment.

I've not noticed about the footwells tbh

I have started some data collecting on how quick the windscreen vents pump out hot air with 'Prog' button pressed and next without to maybe help you out Andy Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Thanks Nick - it would be good to get to the bottom of the 'supplementary electric heater' (PTC) operation in general since there's a lot of confusion and conflicting info flying around. If you press the 'Prog' button at tickover you should notice a brief dip in engine revs and a brief dimming of headlights if they're on. This is due to switching on an increased electrical load. At first I thought that was evidence of the PTC heater firing up but it isn't, since the same effect happens when you simply switch on the windscreen electric heater.
The manual states that the PTC heater is entirely automatic so it should just work when it's cold enough and the engine hasn't reached normal running temperature. In which case, on a cold morning you should presumably notice warm air within a couple of minutes from any vent you care to select, and without selecting 'Prog'. Can anyone confirm this?

Thought the PTC was disabled after the recall, or do I remember that wrongly, and they've come up with a fix?

Can't remember now. Suppose I should search the forum, before asking the dealer when it's in next week.

Did check on the way home, and a slightly warm engine was giving very warm air form the windscreen vents, so presuming it's sorted, but will ask anyway.

Cheers CG for being helpful (there's a first time I suppose Laughing Laughing )
