Scotland 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Santorini Black
2010 TD4 Runs briefly,then stops.

I have an annoying problem where my 2010 TD4 will start and run very briefly then dies when you first put the key in and try to start it.

If I leave the key in and continue to try and start it it will not fire at all.

Take the key out, shut it down and then put the key in to restart it will repeat the initial start and then immediately shuts down.

It has had a new timing belt, water pump tensioners, aux belt and tensioners and has covered approx 2500 miles since then with no issues.

Battery is 2 years old and in perfect health and has been tested.

We've since replaced the fuel filter with a Purflux one and the system is fully bled and there is no air in the system and fuel is getting to the injectors.

It has had all new glow plugs and a non-swirl flap intake manifold replacement.

Despite both items being fairly new I have also replaced the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor with new Bosch ones and still no luck.

I have also replaced the fuel pressure sender and the fuel pressure regulator.

The car will run if I give it a dose of Easy Start but will not run just on diesel alone
and dies when you stop spraying.

I have another high pressure fuel pump I can fit and could also fit a new throttle body if needed but to be honest it all seemed fine before and has no missing teeth and it was very clean inside it.

So I am baffled and it is doing my head in, any ideas that I haven't tried?

Any fault codes?
To me it looks like no fuel, or at least it thinks that there is no fuel/fuel pressure.

You appear to have changed lots of items, what was the last thing you altered before problem started?

Some Fuel Pressure posts to have a look at ----

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

No there are no fault codes showing. I even had a mate who has his own garage business look at it and plug his diagnostics into it and it still wouldn't show any codes.

He checked over all the work I've done so far and couldn't fault it and is also baffled?

I'll have a look at those threads you posted and see if I can work something out from there.

Last thing done before the problem was the timing belt change, but that has been checked and the timing is still spot on.

To me thé problem seems to be, as IanMetro suggests à fuel problem…air in fuel or insufficient pressure.
Could be faulty injector, putting air into the system……..hard to say……without fault codes…..which there should be……..
A lot of parts have been changed……à bit annoying to still have the problem……!
A difficult one……without some fault codes to point the way…..

Good luck……Pete FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

There was another post very similar to yours

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic39307.html

but sadly the OP gave up and never let us know if they solved the problem.
(You could try to send him a PM asking for further info)

The Fuel Pressure is regulated by Pulse Width Modulation, but as it starts some times I suspect air in the system or blockage is starving the engine.

What is the fuel level? If it's around ¼ tank, it could be the tank transfer pump. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Gone.
2006 Tonga Green i6 HSE. Gone.
Audi A5 convertible, the daily driver.
1972 Hillman Avenger GT, the project.

It is saying that it is half full but that doesn't mean it is accurate of course.

I'm planning on filling the tank to see if that helps at all but I have my doubts?

There was a problem with the Fuel Tank Sender wiring, but that tended to put the car into limp mode.
