Its often the labour cost that kills older vehicles. There is so much to dismantle on modern cars before you can even get to do the job. Time is money.

Jules is right, unless you are able to provide the manpower, then running an older car is expensive.

I would contact Austin at Bell. He supplies recon units to garages and may have a local to you garage on his books |

I am going to suggest that "Car Gearbox Repairs – Ayrshire" have so much easier / profitable work that they don't need your business.

Been Emailing Bell Engineering who have stated they don't do gearbox replacement fitting, they can supply a recon for £750+vat however i think ill buy a second hand one for about £250 and get it sent to Neil Engineering and have all the bearings and syncros done , then get a new clutch kit and try and get the gearbox fitted myself.

Replacing the timing belt on the DW12 diesel is a sort of "bread and butter" job for any garage that services cars. Its a common engine and the cambelt/water pump change is quite do-able for a home DIY mechanic - nothing special about it. I did it myself. Jules |
