Gasket or not?

Following the discovery and removal of a completely bodged EGR blank i now have a exhaust smell in the cabin and whilst this may be totally unconnected i didn't have it before i removed the "blank".

so is there supposed to be a gasket at that junction or anywhere on the pipe? (i didn't to be fair recall event seeing reference to one anywhere)

or is there another reason for the smell? (mine is the one that you can't just blank would need mapping out and i'm not considering that). Range Rover L322 (the current posh one)
Discovery 2 (just gone)
Discovery 1 (long gone)

A bit late to say the least but if it's the pipe that comes from the egr to the throttle body there is no gasket either end, have you considered putting the blank back to confirm if its stops the exhaust gas smell, at least that will confirm the fault area.

these will often leak as there's no gasket I would undo it and apply a smear of exhaust paste and retighten
