Overheating issue in very warm weather | |
My trusty 2007 FL2 couldn't cope with a long drive last week in the surprising warm conditions. We crawled stop/start from J9 to J16 on the M25, with no engine problems, then after a zoom along the M40 we got stuck in a traffic jam on the A46 around Coventry. Sat in near stationary traffic for over half an hour I noticed the temperature gauge beginning to rise about horizontal (temp outside 25c) I tried various tactics to avoid it illuminating the warning light, including turning the engine off when traffic stopped. However eventually the temp warning light did illuminate. Stuck in this jam on the outside lane, left me with few options, however after the light coming on several times, the engine eventually cut-out and the engine and battery warning lights lit up. The car wouldn't re-start so I had to coast across lanes and onto a grass verge, with very limited steering or braking available.
The engine was certainly very hot when I eventually risked opening the bonnet, but no visible issue. I waited about 40 mins when the traffic had eased and engine cooled a bit, and the car then started ok and drove normally. It was fine next day driving about 170 miles often at motorway speeds.
This also happened once last year in similar hot weather conditions. So what may be causing this? Is it likely to be a fault with the fan, or another component, or simply an aberration caused by extreme weather and traffic conditions? Is there anything I can check or ask the dealer to check? Any suggestions appreciated. Thx. Life is not a dress rehearsal!
