Turbo pipe an issue?

So,
I've just taken delivery of my 2010 FL2 HSE SD4 Auto (pause for trumpet fanfare!) and it's lovely to drive. A few rattles going over bumps and one of the stupidly designed key fobs needs a new battery soldered in (Sunday job with reading glasses on).

But, a fairly good friend suggested I treated myself to a "new turbo pipe". He says he's had it blow on both his FL2s. Not quick to obtain in France, so he suggested I order one and then make sure I've got 2 jubilee clips for each end.

So, is he having me on, or if he's not, which pipe is he talking about? I've seen drawings showing several, but the car is still very unfamiliar to me. Anyone got any info on the likely "culprit?

Thanks in advance folks

Thé turbo hose your friend mentioned is probably the one I had trouble with last year……I easily obtained a new one from Autodoc.fr…………
After much searching on this forum & others I found that this hose splitting is a very common fault, but it’s not always easy to see the split.

See my posts on Home/Technical……2nd item down…..from page 26……25/9/24…..

Please do not start swapping things out before they fail or at least show signs of major deterioration.
Despite rumoured JLR bad reliability reputation, the (Ford Built) FL2 is very reliable and if looked after normally, it will give you years of trouble free service.

I have been driving FL2 SD4s since 2012 and have yet to suffer any pipe failures.

I see from your previous posts that your reliability views are from older Land Rovers, but my experience is that the Freelander 2 is a different (Better) animal. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

IanMetro : Quite right……I don’t believe in looking for problems…..because on an older vehicle you are more likely to find some !
Thé FL2 is generally thought of as being the most reliable LR made …..my experience would bear this out. There tends to be few very common faults…..like the T/C hose that I have written about…..I was amazed to read how many of these hoses are sold.
You are doing well with yours Ian……. Thumbs Up

This is the pipe he's referring to. It is a common failure.
Normally it's the small hose at the throttle body which splits and is easily replaced from above.
Mine split on two occasions but it was the lower pipe at the intercooler which is a front bumper off to replace job. Not particularly difficult to do.
I eventually replaced mine with silicone hoses which will hopefully not need done again.

I'd carry one as a spare, it will fit in beside your spare wheel. Only other 'just in case' spare to consider is a crank position sensor. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Argos, a wee tip about your keys. I have 2 keys for my 2010 auto and I swop keys every 1st of month.
This means I always have a spare key charged up.
A key stuck in a drawer for months is useless.
I have 136 k miles and have no intention of of changing.
Last month did 909 mule round trip from west Scotland to the Orkney’s and back with overall fuel consumption at 36.9 mpg.

Thank you to all for your help and for sharing your fixes.

Nice idea "janderson41" about the keys. Never thought of that, but always had keys that had simple clip in batteries!. Will try this strategy.

Wow, "OxonPete", you've been to hell and back (and France!) with your issues. Where did you find your Wife? If I asked mine to sit with a diagnostics unit, constantly reading data out as we drove along, I'd never hear the last of why both I and the car, were useless!

I'm not planning on swapping anything that isn't broken, but a car-less spell in the French wilderness has taught me to maybe buy in a couple of the parts which are "regular offenders", back when our Citroen and a local garage left us relying on friends for transport for over 3 weeks.

Does anyone have the pipe part numbers, or is it a case of giving the VIN to the supplier?

38C outside here in France today. Looking for some indoor jobs! Thanks again Thumbs Up

Argos69 : Thanks for your comments……my wife wasn’t keen to read out the live data on the move…..& moreover she did suggest I binned thé FL for a more common Duster….! I was beginning to to think that way myself but it all worked out ok…&..for not a lot of cost……….FL2 running very well since ….even in today’s nearly 40deg……….wife staying indoors…she can’t stand it.
Thé turbo hose I changed …..that caused the problem was à Gates OE part ordered from Autodoc.fr….
Part no. 09-0567……that’s just the small hose to the throttle housing…..was €40 September last.
Bobupandown posted above thé EBay link for the complete hose going to the intercooler……..
Thé FL2 is a great car but the snag is : around here you never see one….very rare….although the engine is basically the same as fitted to lots of Peugeot/Citroen vehicles…..very few garages want to know about them. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

"very few garages want to know about them. "

Which is odd really as they are an old, relatively simple design and parts are generally easy to obtain.

There are quite a few FL2s in Warwickshire and North Yorkshire - see at least one every day Jules

The 2.2 engine is a Ford/PSA one, so any Ford or Peugeot mechanic should know their way around it. DAVE.

Jim
I am also 83, but I still dream (mostly unrealistically) of getting another car to replace my trusty FL2.

Also to those who gather 'useful parts and bits', below is a picture of the bits I gathered for my Triumph Dolomite Sprint. When the car was bought and transported to Scotland, I shoved all the bits into the car's interior to gain some room in my garage.

Over the years, I have had many bits of different cars (including a complete Rover VCool and therefore have been a full member of the 'Come in Handy' Club, but also I may have wasted lots of money in unused bits.

PS I still have some bits that I felt I could not part with

I think we’re all guilty of dreaming, I will do that again or get another etc. I was chatting with my mate this morning who is nearly 80. He said that he is not renewing his hgv and doing the medical etc again. He has not used or needed it since the day he retired, I just think that he didn’t want to admit to himself he was getting old. He even said it was just nice to still have on his license.

When I rebuilt my 2.2 top end, I replaced all the rubber boost hoses with silicone replacements, and glow plugs too.
The current owner won't have to worry about boost hose issues, and hopefully nothing else ether.
I wouldn't go out of my way to replace the hoses unless they were coming off anyway. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Hi all,
Just by way of closure, I've ordered a spare hose with clips to keep in my "secret stash of handy bits". Probably having bought one, I'll never need it, but better than the opposite way round!
Once again, big thanks to all helpers!
