No throttle response & won’t start

Freelander 2 SD4 13MY automatic

Other half has been having issues with her FL2.

Does not like starting but normally can be coaxed into life - worse when engine is hot.

This morning would not start at all - starter clicked but it wouldn’t turn over. NO low battery warning on the dash & no stored dtc. Had a new battery last July & indicator on it is showing green so should be OK - will put a meter on it when back from work.

Second issue has been progressively worse throttle response. Have checked intercooler hoses and no splits. Have done the trick with ignition on & throttle pedal to the floor. Have also got it really hot & then done a good blast on the motorway to do a dpf regen. Between the last two it seemed to fix it but then problem came back.

There are no dtc stored for this either.

Before I resort to booking in with local indie, which has a long lead time, does anyone have any ideas or have had these issues themselves & can give answers.

Thanks in advance.

As regards your first problem….non -starting first thing in the morning I had the same problem Jan ‘24
…it was the starter motor ….contacts inside. I had the same problem with my D2 years ago….I fitted a brand new Denso unit to FL…ok since. As regards lack of throttle response could be lots of things….throttle control unit fuel filter…or a brunch of other things……….you should have some DTCs shown though…….lots of cheaper or not so good code readers just don’t pickup up the codes……….without the codes you are just guessing…..

Best of luck…. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current
D2 TD5 HSE Man MY 1999 470kmls….gone 2014 ….lovely engine..chassis rotten
D1 300TDI Man MY 1996 56kmls….gone 1999…D2 much better
Wife’s FL1 1.8P MY 2001 32kmls …gone 2007…has Mini since.

Will your FL2 start using a battery booster?

Have you changed the Fuel Filter lately - if so - Was it a LR one with the internal valve?

If your FL2 has been driven gently at constant low throttle openings, have the turbo vanes clogged up. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Thanks - starter motor had crossed my mind & now you mention it, I recall in the past fitting a refurb kit either to my D2, or a FL1 or FL2… it was a known issue & Denso supplied the kit to repair it.

As far as dtc codes go, I have an IID tool which has been very good & which I don’t think is missing anything here as there is no restricted performance message being displayed on the dash which suggests to me it is something that doesn’t have a sensor.

I’m pretty certain it had a fuel filter at the last service, I’ll check but if it did I don't think it’ll have been a genuine one!

I was wondering about throttle body but I took it off when I checked the intercooler hoses & it moves freely with no tell tales of broken gears inside.

Am about to check battery voltage & try to jump start it now I’m home from work - it was all a bit of a rush this morning!

As above, I need to check the bill but think the fuel filter may have been replaced at the last service & if so would be pretty certain it wouldn’t have been a genuine one.

As for turbo vanes, how would I know without stripping it?

Throttle response was really bad but the throttle pedal reset (or dpf regen) made it very responsive last time. I’m wondering if the lack of response is the gearbox needing a flush & software update?

Contacts in the solenoid on the starter. The click indicates that the electromagnet is working but the supply to the coils in the motor isn’t getting through due to poor contacts. Kits are normally available on the bay of thieves.

Battery is showing 12.4v on the meter.

Connected to my D2 with engine running at 2000rpm using some heavy duty cables & still clicking so time to buy a repair kit from www.repairkitsuk.com 👍

Still leaves me with the lack of throttle response though… 🤬

This thread has a few ideas about lack of power and the answer to the OP's problem. (MAF Sensor)

Have checked the fuel filter & it’s a Nappa branded one so doesn't fill me with confidence - have ordered a new genuine parts one. If that doesn't work then I’ll look at the MAF sensor.

Hadn’t realised until I did a bit of digging just how much a cheap fuel filter can cause the car to go into limp mode!

Thé fuel filter has to be favourite…….‘Nappa’ is a brand I have never seen but I have seen lots of spurious cheap fuel filters on EBay..I always buy a genuine filter kit ….more expensive but the fuel filter doesn’t need changing that often. As you have researched there are lots of problems caused by these cheapie filters. When you take the genuine filter out of the box you will see it is made by Purflux for LR….identical.
Hopefully a genuine filter will put things right. IanMetro suggested MAF sensor……could be but a DTC should be flagged up. I had similar trouble last year…..had stuttering / hesitation which got worse , I had ‘Reduced Performance’ & DTC P006A-00 suggesting MAF /MAP sensors…..I sent for new OE replacement but unfortunately new Hitachi MAF sensor was faulty….a bit of a headache……MAP sensor was changed…..improved things but after doing a Live Data run……very useful…..& looking on the forum again I had a REALLY close look at the T/C hoses & found a slight split in the hose to throttle housing…..I found it is a very common problem.
Lots of posts on the subject…….can only find my own since you tend to read them then can’t find the posts again easily. Glad to say my FL2 is running very well…..must do update on my post Home>Techical 2nd subject down. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

Well, no doubt about the starter solenoid being fubar…

Replaced the fuel filter with a genuine one so we’ll see if that cures the lack of throttle response 🤞
