P0480 fan problem on LR2 2008 HSE i6

dear all

I have overheating issue due to fan problem, the error code is p0480

1. When I start the car, the fan is moving, then after almost 1 minute it stop
2. I disconnect the fan from the fan control module and connect with 12v battery and both fan is rotating fast, I conclude the fan is OK
3. I check MIDI fuse FE3 80Amp, it's OK... supply current is OK

4. I check the purple wire from the ECU pin 8 to the end female connector to fan control module and it's not broken wire

What could be the issue then?

Does your Air Conditioning work?

Not only do the fans and Air-Con share the same earth, but it seems the Air-Con can effect the workings of the fan.

The fan module is controlled by the ECU and signals are hard to measure as Pulse Width Modulation is employed.

As you have checked the Purple Control Wire, I think that you may have already done this, but checking/inspecting/cleaning plug pins and wiring from ECU - Fan Module - Fans may be worthwhile, aswell as checking actual coolant temp/pressure (carefully).

Fault similar to yours on Landy Forum.

* The AC is not working I thought it was different ecosystem so I put that as 2nd priority as overheat engine kick in after the AC is not working and I figure out seems due to the fan error
* From the link you share the culprit seems the same purple wire which send intermittent signal, I will double check the same and update in this forum if I find something useful

Although not directly your problem, this thread from Member RPA gives lots of info about the Climate Control System

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic40192.html

and here are 2 more useful threads by RPA (useful if things get bad)

I take it that from your above comments that you have downloaded the Freelander Repair Manual and Diagrams already

PS Don't forget to check the common earth point is intact and not corroded (G1D129), although these faults may be separate or caused by a system logical common problem.

Do not forget to check the Air-Con Compressor signal connector on the pump, it can fall off. No signal stops the system working properly. A failed compressor clutch will also be a problem.

Thanks everyone, total error I have is below:

I have not done check on purple wiring, and will update you, as per spec, now I suspect it's wiring issue although when I check seems it's intermittent because pin8 on ECU to other side of fan connector is fine

check the purple wire, visually its OK

Its not simple job, need to remove ac compressor, battery box, belt, air intake box and the last bolt mounted on ac compressor bracket is complicated to be removed

summary: still no idea, but I dont see the reason to replace the purple wire 🙂‍↕️
