So I've had ongoing problems with my Freelander diesel for months now. On very long journeys on the motorway after 3 or 4 hours it would go into limp mode. We dried the turbo and injecting cleaner products which seem to help a bit.

then, a month ago we put it in for a service and new back breaks. When they took it our for a test run the engine just cut out, they had to get it towed back to their garage. They had a lot of problems diagnosing the problem, finally settling on replacing the fuel pump in the tank. But this didn't fix it, and cost hundreds.

They gave up at this point so we took it to another garage, a diesel specialist. all they could figure out to do was put an extra pump in the engine bay. We drove it away, all fine, took it on a decent journey, it arrived fine, then when we arrived back home the engine cut out again just before we got to the front door. We tried to restart it, the engine turned over but wouldn't fire. We pushed it to the side or the road, then tried starting it again and it worked ok.

So now we've spent even more money and still have the same problem. Now we have an appointment with Land Rover here in Bilbao who didn't sound very optimistic they could fix it, and are going to charge us 140 euro an hour just to look.

Any ideas from you guys would be gratefully received.

Could be crankshaft sensor, these do not show up any fault codes and are fairly cheap to replace, when it was serviced was a genuine JLR fuel filter fitted? as non genuine ones are unreliable, 2013 FL2 XS.

Thanks for that, I'll check with the garage on the filter, and get them to check the crank sensor.

There is a small blue wire under the fuel filter which can cause problems if corroded or has poor connections. Jules

So it's been to 3 garages, the final one being Land Rover in Bilbao. They've never seen a vehicle with so many cascading problems. Its been there for 3 weeks now and they've identified a load of problems. All the injectors have problems, fuel pumps not working right, butterfly intakes, and I think there's more but my spanish isn't good enough to understand it all so my partner has been dealing with them. They reckon they've found all the faults now, total bill is Euro 4400. My partner is a bit of a bull dog with garage guys and workmen in general, so I don't think they're pulling a fast one, she said they've been really nice and explained things well. I've got to the point of it now, after 3 months and over 5k total where I just want to forget about the cost or it'll drive me mad. They're giving us a 6 month warranty on all the work so at least that gives me some security. Hopefully we'll get it back in the next week.
It's done 140k miles with almost no problems except a steering rack which I replaced with a secondhand one, so it's just something I have to accept. And in all my years I've never had a car do this to me.
