Starting to actively search for a TD4 in SEQ and I see a few without towbar and roof rails or bars which are desired features for me. So, what would I expect to pay for a reasonable tow bar fitted and what brands/suppliers do you think?
Also, what is the roof cargo system on these vehicles? Do I have to get rails and then fit crossbars? I want to carry kayaks and occasional roof basket. Again what brands and approx. pricing would one expect?

I fitted a Wiitter towbar. It was quite easy to install and Ive transferred it to each new Freelander2 that Ive owned. But the OEM electrics can be awkward. JLR produced 3 different towing wiring looms during the production of the FL2. The early one was the most fiddly and required coding at the Dealers whilst that last one (for my 2014 model) was a cinch and totally plug-n-play.

Hopefully someone more local can answer your questions in detail.

As it happens SWMBO and I are visiting our daughter in Brisbane in April. I'll keep an eye out for any FL2s.  Jules

When I got my FL2 from my nephew in 2023 it didnt have a towbar. I sourced one from TRSpares in Adelaide.Cant remember the cost. Just make sure you specify that its for a 2014 model so you get the plug and play electrics for it. They may have some roof racks as well.

Some information on roof rails here. I think all you can get these days is copies, so a bit of installation & post installation care is required. It's our corrugated roads which destroy the things.

Well if there was ever a thread to scare someone away from roof bars, that's got to be it!


I'm on my second set of after market bars due to paint flake and missing plastic covers .

If you're handy fitting yourself isn't difficult. Just take your time.

The only advice I have given in the past is don't tighten anything until all the bolts are located.
The cross bar can be a pig if the rails are already in place.
My second set were loosely assembled on the floor then lifted onto the roof.

Same goes for the towbar, don't tighten anything until all bolts are in place.
(There's a vid of someone fitting his own and he struggles like f***.
But he tightens bits up.
I'm sure while filming, it goes dark twice!

I'd suggest using something like sikaflex to attach the plastic feet covers on the roof bars. They are not a brilliant fit. I lost 2 before fixing them securely. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

On the second one I bought the plastic covers seem to have a better way of being secrured but I still applied liberal amounts of black 'Hot Melt' plastic from a glue gun.
