EGR Valve

Can anybody tell me where exactly is the “Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve” located on the engine? Last week I took my Freelander 2 for its second service, I told them at the garage that I could see black smoke in the mirror during hard acceleration (1st & 2nd gear). After the diagnostics they told the EGR Valve needs replacement, but I can still see some black smoke during hard acceleration. I think it could be the engine oil they are using because when I asked them which exactly oil they use, the only specification they could give me is that is a synthetic one. Confused[b][/b]

Glad that I could help.
And that quantity of black smoke will allways be there during HARD acceleration. This is the way that engine ECU it's programmed to deliver fuel.
On the other hand, if you drive a while (several days) softly and then you push the engine to the limit, there should be a quantity of black smoke for a few minutes. It's the carbon deposits from exhaust pipes. In a way it's even recomended that one or more times a month to drive it hard for a few minutes for cleaning the carbon deposits from the pipes.
But as a rule of thumb, you should never give it full throtle under 1700-1800 RPM in any gear (especialy higher ones). This because of the surge phenomena which happens below those RPMs that could damage your turbo. Turbo is asked (by the ECU based on the throtle angle) to move a quantity of air far more greater than it could generate (and engine could absorbe) and therefore appears an oscillatory resonance who could snap you turbo shaft. Above these RPMs all is OK because the engine will easilly absorbe the increased quantity of air.
Take it easy on the gas (progresively) until those RPM and then give it hell. Very Happy
