Yes, its interesting.
I took my EGR cooler and valve off without removing the common rail or PCV. I did remove the ECU to give more room.
Without being able to see the EGR vey well, it was rather awkward and I used a mirror to see where the bolts etc were. I had to lie on top of the engine in order to work behind it.

I never thought to remove the common rail or PCV which clearly gives much greater access  Jules

Removing the fuel rail comes with an element of risk, dirt can enter the fuel system, damaging injectors, and all solid lines are use once items anyway, so can leak if reused.
Best do the job from behind without worries of messing up the injection system. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.
