Rear brake disc change

Hi , Should the Freelander 2 have brake shoes within the rear discs, mine doesn't on taking off the caliper on the drivers side and looking in

but when ordering new ones the picture shows that it comes with shoes and is a slightly different shape to mine. The handbrake on mine works perfectly.

AFAIK If you have a handbrake lever then you have disks and cable actuated shoes for the parking brake.

If you have a switch on the central console for the parking brake then you have the EPB (electric parking brake). The EPB uses a motor to drive the disk brake caliper so no need for separate shoes.
The EPB system is much easier to work on in my experience. Jules

À quick comment Jules : Yes thé EPB system is easier to work on but……..in my experience…you need to work on it a lot more than with the earlier…..BMW style system….seperate parking brake shoes/system.
Never had a problem with the H/B system…..still OE after 160k + mls….also brake pads for main brake last much longer………on 3rd set……from new…….& they are very small pads….. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

Sorry but I take the complete opposite view.
I've had three cars with the mini-drum and shoe system and now one with the EPB.
The drum system for a start has mechanical disadvantage being both a mini-drum and shoe setup.
In addition, it's difficult to monitor the condition and maintain, to do so, requiring disc/hub removal along with the caliper carrier. Which of course, being done by the book, requires the carrier bolts replacing.
IMO with a heavy car like the FL2, the EPB is significantly better with the potential for being used as intended on steep ground, when the EPB is on, it's ON!
TBH, I can't say I've noticed any real difference in pad life and of course this can be offset with there being no shoes to replace. No need to manually adjust /balance the EPB either.
Finally, one of the models I owned had a reputation for the shoes delaminating and the friction material jamming the drum with the associated consequences.
This may read like a bit of a rant but as you may gather, I'm really not a fan of the old system.

Sometimes it's difficult to include the spirit in which a post is meant.
Just for clarity, I'm just introducing my differing view of the subject and is not meant to be critical in any way. My view is of course, just my view, nothing more Smile.

Have to agree. The EPB is brilliant.
I loathe the drum and shoes within disc setup, always a total PITA to set up and not very efficient. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

VAG cars used to have a hand brake and cable system that used the rear disk brakes only, with no need for shoes. It worked well until the lever turning the piston seized, often requiring a complete new caliper.
I dont know if VAG still use that system. Jules

My son has a 2014 polo with that disc / handbrake set up. I tend to have to free it off a couple of times every year.
Was servicing a friend's Skoda Rapid today, amazingly the handbrake mechanism wasn't seized, but the rear brake pads in the caliper carriers were! Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
