Cabin Fumes / Turbo Replacement Cost

Hi all, I’m hoping the knowledge out there might be able to help us out!

We are getting fumes coming into the Freelander when we slow down and park up. Had a garage check it out and apparently the injector pipes are all good so it’s not that. They are saying though that it is caused by a failing turbo and quoted £1600inc vat for replacement. Firstly, I’m not sure how a failing Turbo is putting fumes into the cabin and secondly does 1600 sound about right for a replacement?

It's not the turbo.
It's more likely to be the seal leaking between the air intake pipe and turbo down pipe. The factory clip needs replacing with a worm clip, after making sure the seal isn't folded or flipped from incorrect fitting. This allows oil to drip out the pipe, and down onto the turbo, which then causes smells and smoke.

£1600 for a turbo seems high. A genuine turbo is about £1100, so £500 for a couple of hours labour tops, is a lot.

I've arrowed the joint that leaks.

Thanks for info…ours looks a little different to that but will take a look for the pipe and check the clip.

I’ve had a Turbo Technics turbo fitted to my TD5 Defender in the past and that seems to be going strong. Has anyone had any experience with these on a TD4 Freelander?

The organ pipes were deleted on newer versions of the inlet tract but the comments about changing the clip are still valid. There is also a smaller pipe venting the cam cover that can leak on the bend to the right of the organ pipes prior to the concertina section. I also had the concertina section come away from the inlet pipe work on a modded joint of the dissimilar materials.

Was there not also an issue mentioned in previous threads of a problem with the seal between engine compartment and the driver's footwell around the steering column, letting engine fumes come into the cabin?

Yes, but that was accompanied by an increase in noise levels!

Bossbob, yes but he says he used to have a Defender, so any vehicle is going to seem quiet! Smile 2005 D3 2.7 Auto
