Oil!

So had a bad smell through the cabin last couple of weeks. After someone hinted to me to have a look under the cover there was lots of oil on the left hand side. However I've no idea what it might be. Managed to get it booked in with a local garage on Wednesday, (local LR indy is booked till end of June!) but wondered what the bods here might reckon. I'm absolutely in no way mechanically minded, so if there's something simple I can check before whilst I'm trying to give the area a clean please let me know. Words of one syllable and circled pictures are good 😂

I don't think I can give any specific advice but when I find an oil leak the first thing I do is clean it all off with some decent degreaser then keep an eye on it to see where the leak originates from. Once it gets to that state it is probably very difficult to see what is what.

On specifics, I *think* that large pipe running across the left of the picture is your crankcase ventilation pipe but I would be suprised if it generated that much oil. So I wonder if it is actually residue of diesel and you have a leak from your injectors, fuel rail or pipes?

If you are not technically minded though I would leave it to your mechanic. They will probably find it easier to diagnose if it has not been messed with. FL2 2007 2.2d Auto SE. Baltic Blue.

I'd degrease the area then observe for origin of the oil leak Jules

It could well be No4 injector copper seal has failed, so is letting diesel combined with combustion products past.
Have you run the engine with the cover removed to see if you can locate the source? 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

Appreciate the comments and suggestions, thank you.

No, not run it without the cover off just yet. Given I'd limit my technical skills to removing the engine cover I'll leave it to the local guys to look now.
What's with the foam block under the plastic? Looks to have been melted and that whole cover is so oily too.

The foam is for sound insulation. The fact it looks melted suggests to me that No4 injector seal is letting combustion products out of the combustion chamber, which is both hot and laden with diesel which will dissolve the foam. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

Awesome, thank you for the information. Is it a necessity to replace that insulation immediately or something I can get sorted after getting that potential injector leak done? Just trying to think ahead in case it's not a readily available part

The insulation is just for sound depending, and serves no other purpose. Mine disintegrated years ago, so now I have just the plastic cover, and I suspect I'm not the only one to be missing it. I'm not a fan of foam over an engine anyway, as it's far to easy to catch fire, if an ignition source is nearby. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

To the best of my limited knowledge, that cover is LR038763 Insulator, Fuel Supply. Good luck sorting your leak, and please keep us appraised.
