Freelander 2 2014will not crank

Hi to everyone,
I have a problem with my Freelander 2 2014 facelift man td4
It won't crank
when I get in it sees the key unlocks the steering wheel and when the start button is pressed the speedo and rev counter both go up the message press clutch pedal is displayed but it doesn't crank at all.

I can't remember when you put for foot on the clutch should the press clutch pedal message disappear as mine isn't this could be a duff clutch pedal switch? I know this will stop the cranking of the engine I think there are 3 switches on mine.
any help gratefully received.
cheers keir

Have you tried putting a charging lead between the battery and the starter motor

I think its the clutch pedal switch that's why I was asking about the message on the dash the relay for the starter motor isn't being energised.

If you can eliminate the clutch pedal switch as the cause then it could be a problem with the starter motor. Or more precisely the starter solenoid which is known to fail after a while. Can you here a faint "clicking" as you attempt to start??

I had this as an intermittent fault over a two year period which just about drove me nuts!!

yes I have tried a jump start pack ( no difference)
I cannot hear any sounds from the starter or solenoid but I don't think the relay is being called for ie not being energized.

Most diagnostic readers allow you to test live values of things like clutch pedal sensors. You'll be looking for a change of status when the pedal is pressed. No status change would suggest a faulty position sensor, or maybe wiring damage or a faulty plug. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

yes you are correct but when I depress the pedal I get a % figure from the clutch master linier switch, I get a top of clutch when the pedal press and the third on I get no change in either state I think this should be the bot clutch switch I believe you must have this one to be able to start it?

The message should disapear when you press the clutch pedal so yes, it sounds like the switch is at fault.

thanks I will look into it I think there are 3 switches
top of pedal
bottom of pedal
% of pedal movement ( on the back of the clutch master cylinder)

all fixed
the back clutch pedal sensor had came unclipped (this one stops you starting the car)
the front pedal sensor must see the pedal release to allow stop/start to work

happy days
